I would request Delhi Government to initiate identification, root cause analysis and the remedies in Restaurant/Banquet Halls and Hotel Industry/ In-door and Out-door Caterers in Delhi. One of the area of the corruption is levying of service charge compulsory, illegal charging of VAT on 40% or 60% of the value of food bill which is already being taxed under service tax, fake bills, evasion of taxes, poor quality/ services, under invoicing, over-charging, impact of corrupt practices of Sales Tax department and Municipal Corporation. more

The way restaurants are running in Delhi is like a horse without master. Is there any chk, amount of sales tax they are charging is really deposited. Quite possible they have taken a compounding scheme and depositing 1% of turnover. What is the logic of service charge when they are sitting with a restaurant too serve the people. Cost of food itself is charges of the services, now if the want to charge for bringing kitchen to guest table, they should not open a restaurant. This is the minimum they are supposed to do if they have opened a restaurant. If we count together a customer end up paying 30% extra to the food bill he has eaten which is nothing but a robbery and should come under chk. Very serious matter to be taken up on priority. more

Service charge is not a statutory requirement for customers to pay but the restaurant management charge it on their own. It varies from 2-15% depending upon the place you go. I think only simplification of tax structure can only stop the manipulations done by restaurants in VAT.. more
