Activated Charcoal or Carbon is not a food product but used in water processing and filtering plants to remove or absorb odour or smell and it is approved as a secondary processor or HI ( SUITABLE FOR INCIDENTAL CONTACT WITH FOOD) but not as an ingredient or to be used in recipes more
Activated Charcoal health benefits include teeth whitening, relieving intestinal bloating, treating hangovers, treating inflammatory skin conditions, slowing down aging process, reducing cholesterol levels, promoting kidney function, purifying water, treating diarrhea, and acting as natural deodorant. Activated charcoal is an extremely popular natural remedy found in many homes around the world thanks to its ability to remove toxins and chemicals that you may have become exposed to via accidental ingestion. Activated charcoal works via a technique known as at adsorption, whereby it draws certain components to itself and is able to inactivate them prior to excretion or elimination by the body. more
Carbon can be obtained from wood, coal or coconut shell. All these products on heating to red-hot conditions and on passing steam over that become activated as it becomes highly porous and density gets reduced to 1/4 of the original charcoal. All these carbons can adsorb quite a large quantity of colors, chemicals and gases in the order of wood, coal and coconut. Activated coconut charcoal can adsorb very large volume gases and some becomes helpful to human beings . But the problem is most of these activated carbons will not be of food grade and thus not edible. Edible activated carbon can only be made from coconut carbons if handled with care. Thus the so called carbon powder that is being added to food items is only commercial and is a cheating process more
Let FSSAI, please clarify for the information of the general public. more
