adulterated silver varak/coating on sweets test

1. Wipe the silver leaf on top of sweets of foods. If the residue sticks to the fingers it is adulterated with aluminium.
2. Ignite a piece of Silver Leaf. If it is silver it will turn into a ball of silver, whereas aluminium will burn and leave behind ashes that are greyish black.
3. Place silver leaves in a test tube and add diluted hydrochloric acid. If it becomes turbid with a white precipitate it is silver because aluminium can neither become turbid or precipitate
4. Rub some silver leaf between the palms of the hand if it is silver it will disappear if it is aluminium it will become a small ball. more

It is no secret that the sweet shop owners are earning a margin of not less that 60% of the selling prices of sweets and despite that they never lose a scope of adulteration of their products to increase their margin even up to 80%. The governments and their agencies become silent spectators of public looting but continue to remain unmoved by taking eye washing actions by conducting some sample checking, the results of which are never made public so that their monthly donations continue to remain unaffected. Under such circumstances, your expectations for use of silver wrappers by the sweet shop owners appear to be too high! more  
Thank you Mr. Chinny Krishna for reminding the circle members on the manufacturing process of silver foils. About 6 months back there was a post on the manufacturing process of silver and gold foils. As said it was hammering of silver between layers of Ox intestines. There ere quite a few comments on this as silver foils are used for sweets as well as Paans . How ever in Wikipedia we see " Technologies like beating over sheets of black special treated paper, polyester sheets coated with food grade calcium powder are used instead of ox-guts. " HOW DO THE CONSUMER DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE TWO ? more
