Can the experts or the FSSAI please advise if its ok to have 10% ash content in foods? Isnt that what the maggi episode is about. Has FSSAI allowed ash content in food now? more
I agree with the views of MR. D K Sarkar. Ash Contents means the amount left (% as ash) after the combustion of a material. Usually to measure Ash Contents, the material is subjected to elevated temperature (say 850 to 1000 degree C) for a certain period of time and the remains behind is measured in % terms is known as Ash Content. On combustion, organic material is decomposed and leaves the system in form of Gases such as CO2 or Water. What remains behind is known as ash content. For example, when we burn Wood, we are left with Ash and if we note the % left behind, it is known as Ash Contents of Wood. It would be a wrong impression to conclude that Ash Contents mean that the product itself contains Ash. more
Ash works as manure in agriculture and if same philosophy is considered good for human body by Producing Companies FSSAI will stand in favour of such products. more
'Ash' means the residue which would be left after incineration of a material. Not that it is impossible to incorporate 10% of such material in food - e.g. precipitated chalk(calcium carbonate) or precipitated dolomite(calcium-magnesium carbonate) used in some brands of toothpastes/dentifrices, etc. would be difficult for detection in organoleptic appeal to common consumers. But such adulterants would be rather costly to make profit! However, some cases of adulteration of sweetmeats like 'Barfi','Penra', 'Sandesh' with talc (mineral used in talcum powders) were in the news. Detailed investigation i.e. authenticity of the subject need be known. Correctness of the subject should lead to conviction of the manufacturer, and also, incorrectness of the subject should lead to conviction of the originator/motivator of creating such mal-air. more
The permissible limit for spices can be 10 % as it varies from 3 5 to 10 % depending upon the spices as cardamom has a an ash content of 5.98 % and of celery seed , it is 9.3 %. The sum total of any contents are taken based on the quantity consumed per portion as no one take spices alone and it is generally 1-2 % of total product consumed. more
