Diabetes management from a Doctor friend

If you have diabetes or have a family member who has diabetes, please remember and remind them to take very good care of the feet. A LOT of complications can be prevented if all diabetics are educated about foot care right at first diagnosis.

Diabetic patients should at all times keep their feet covered. Wear light footwear even at home. Keep the soles and ankles well moisturised. Wear pure cotton socks and change them often. Wash the spaces between toes while bathing and completely dry them without fail

While going out, wear completely closed shoes preferably, but perfectly fitting ones. Not too tight, not shoes that bite. Attend to any shoebites or cuts immediately. Inspect your feet frequently with a hand mirror from all sides for any small injuries/boils

Keep sugar levels under control always. Check your Vitamin B12 levels and supplement them through diet or through medications. See your diabetologist for any sort of numbness/ tingling sensation or frequent slipping of footwear from the feet. These could be signs of neuropathy

Watch for any change in color of skin and seek medical attention. Ensure that feet and toes are warm. In case of cold/dark toes, see the doctor. Watch for claudication ( severe pain in calf muscles after walking short distances). It indicates PVD (peripheral vascular disease)

A good diabetologist not only treats high sugar but also makes his patient aware of what to expect and how to prevent it. Dietary guidelines, keeping other comorbidities in check, periodic retina check, watching for microalbuminuria and foot care are all part of diabetes care. more

Once a diabetic patient then always a diabetic patient, Secondly diabetes is herditary and no one can do anything about it. We can control diabetes by strict diet control, excercises and proper care of the feet. Diabetes can never be eradicated. more
It is astonishing, but a single comment on to query from this circle. It appears not to share anything or people whom so ever suffers should be slaves to medicines what ever prescribed by diabatologist. more
Ms.Vinitha and myself have forgotten to mention one more important thing and that is to wear only leather footwear and not rubber of rexin foot wear more
Thank you for a beneficial discussion. more
Very informative post. If some one can clarify few issues, the clarification would be of great support to all DIABETES patients. 1) as most of diabatologists only interested in prescribing medicine and they don't share metabolism imbalance leading to diabetic. 2) many doctors seldom recommend avoid eating carbohydrates foods and recommend millet flour in place of wheat based flours. 3) Many diabatologists recommend eating all fruits, where as some recommends selective ones. Why cannot local circle members recommend :: Yoga Asanas Exercise Brisk walking And recommend eating more digestive fiber foods. Avoid eating all junk, deep fried spicy, foods. Speed well eat timely etc. Could be benefitial to cholesterol, fatty lever, liver cerocis, constipation, piles, gallbladder acidity and gastrointestinal issues There are many home remedies to control DIABETES, which can be added in ones day to day life. Vinitaji explained a broad picture of the symptoms and its remedies, but, I feel, many major supportive suggestions can be shared to needy ones,as many of the members in this circle may be able to share effective guidelines. more
