India needs Jail reforms

See attached. A supritendant today was found to be giving undue facilities to VIP and likely a minister in Tihar jail. This is common across India. Pay bribe for facilities in jail. Also similarly one must pay bribes for not getting beaten in most jails.

Can Localcircles escalate need for jail reforms in the country. There needs to be a department in Govt of India which has visibility and accountability for every jail in the country.

A simple thing like have 6 CCTVs in each jail and feed available in Delhi as welll as state chief ministers office will lower harassment by 50%.

Can we put our weight behind this social cause or will we just think about ourseleves and since we dont have a family member inside, how does it matter. more

Dear one, I totally agree with you. Jails have become a mockery of punishment. Some of my take on the issue are- 1- There should be restrictions on Parole. Culprits convicted of heinous crimes shouldn't be granted parole. 2- Members of any legally constituted body, when put in Jail in any capacity, should not be put in jails controlled by the same political party. If You make improvement in jail then more peoples will get involved in crime as they will get Free Food & accommodation. Make it too worst so that peoples will think 100 times to go for crime. more
First of all there should be de-criminalization of civil and business laws. Almost every law has a criminal penalty. Laws should be made simpler so people and adhere to them and there should be fewer laws. After that we should modernize all laws and keep in mind that we are in the 21st Century and not the 19th Century when most laws were first drawn up by our erstwhile colonial masters to keep us subjugated. more
