Is Milk top cause of diabetes?

Some studies are claiming that milk causes diabetes. Can experts and others share their views?

Type 1 Diabetes

Cow’s milk is a foreign protein in the human body and studies have shown that infants who have been given cow’s milk instead of mother’s milk at an early age are more likely to have Type 1 diabetes than their breast-fed counterparts.

Type 2 Diabetes

Most people think that sugar is the cause of type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar is the result of type 2 diabetes. A major cause of it is fat. Fat literally causes insulin resistance. 49 per cent of the calories from whole milk come from fat. In skimmed milk, 35 per cent of the calories come from fat. And dairy products like paneer, cheese are even higher in fat 60 – 70%, with ghee being 100% fat.

Hormones

Insulin is a hormone and diabetes is a hormonal disorder. The hormone secretions in our body are orchestrated by the pituitary gland. When one hormone is out of balance, others also go out of synch. Milk, the secretion of a female mammal, is naturally loaded with hormones— oestrogen, progesterone, prolactin, powerful growth hormones, oxytocin and more. Dairy can be implicated in the hormonal disorders that we see today – PCOD, hypothyroidism, premature puberty, infertility, prostate enlargement, breast, prostate and ovarian cancers and of course diabetes!

Stress causes diabetes

Have you noticed that whenever you experience emotional or physical stress, the blood sugar levels most likely go up? For example, during an operation or a medical intervention, fever or even a visit to the dentist, the blood sugar levels may rise. When we are stressed we produce adrenaline. When animals are stressed they, too, produce adrenaline. Cows are subject to crude artificial insemination, and after delivery have their babies taken away from them so that all their milk can be sold. They are re-inseminated just a few months after, so that they are pregnant and lactating at the same time. After just a few repeated pregnancies she is spent and goes to slaughter. This is a severe stress and therefore dairy is full of stress hormones and contributes not just to diabetes but also psychological issues.

While mother milk is universally acclaimed as the healthiest feeding for infants, it has its limitations to meet the requirements of children after attaining a specified age, to say, above 12 months or so with certain exceptions where mothers lactate more than enough milk. In such cases feeding of cow milk has been prescribed as the best substitute, as we have been learning from our early age. If cow milk is a source of inviting disease like 'diabetes', how it had been recommended for feeding of infants since centuries is a matter of concern. I feel, its not cow milk but adulterated milk claimed to be pure cow milk. In present days people, particularly those living in urban and semi-urban areas are fully dependent on either packaged/processed milk or the milk they obtain on door delivery, none of which is pure cow milk and the problem starts thereat. Therefore, in my opinion, blaming cow milk as one of the source of diabetes may not be fair at this stage and it requires many more studies and researches before reaching to the final conclusion. However, not being an expert in the field, it would not be wise for me to enter into any debate on the issue. more
Nowhere have I read that milk causes diabetes. Yes fat is a cause for diabetes especially around the midriff. Yet I have seen so many diabetics who are so thin that they need to take insulin, so it just does not make sense. Secondly Type I diabetes, you are born with and Type II you acquire, either thru your ancestors who had it or thru your parents. My father drank a glass of milk every day of his 91 years and he did not suffer from diabetes but I am diabetic so is my sister who is lactose intolerant so cannot consumer milk at all. My grandmother was diabetic but my father did not get the disease but we siblings acquired it, so really we don't know what is the real cause of it. more
I surprised to know that Cow milk causing diabetes. Cow milk is healthiest milk among other milks. more
Prior to 70's infants were given mother’s milk till the age of 3 to 5 years. Those infants are now at the age group of 50 and above and you will find many of them are diabetics. How do you justify your statement that Cow milk is responsible for diabetes. more
Cow milk is not cause of diabetes, so are double tone milk and skimmed milk for a healthy exercise taking person. Full milk 1s 6% in buffalo milk, Homogenised is 4.5%, Tone milk is 3% and double tone is 1.5% fat. Constipation also affects diabetic patients which is relieved by milk intake. more
All nonsense. Motivated observations all aimed at sabotaging India's dairy industry. What about those who don't drink milk but kill these animals and eat them? Actual cause of diabetes is that people eat too much and do little physical work. They think that doing physical work is below their dignity. Eating food laden with refined oil and dalda , drinking and smoking is our forte. Have you seen labourers and your servants suffering from diabetes? Or even Corona, which is the scourge of the rich and over fed over weight only 25 percent of our population ? If a proper survey and analysis of Covid data is done, you will find that very few of the poor and malnourished people are affected by the pandemic whilst disproportionate high numbers of the well off hygiene conscious people have died by this corona virus. more
