Is olive oil A scam

Recently learned that olive oil from many companies in India is highly refined.

Reading up a bit I am now wondering whether olive oil is a big scam in India. Touted as heart healthy by companies, not objected upon by authorities and sold at 5 times regular vegetable oil. Upper middle class falls for it..

Can the experts please shed light if such refined oilve oils are good at all? more

Without going through the 38 comments, I would like to state as follows: Have lived over 50 years in Europe. My profession let me travel worldwide including to Italy which is said, along with Spain, to be the biggest producer of olive oil. The Italians/Spaniards use their olive oil both for cooking as well as for salads. And they are quite happy with it. It's only in India that one hears of differentiations: do NOT use olive oil for cooking; heating it makes it harmful. Use it only cold and just for salads. On the other hand the masseurs in our country prescribe the most expensive "cold pressed extra virgin olive oil" for massage. Come on, folks, there's got to be some limit to the use of our common sense..... more
Better use local oil more
Olive Oil is a mania with the higher class and higher middle class people and recommended by the dieticians or doctors. In the present world and with the improvement of science, the manufacturer can do possible anything under the sky. We have to believe and go by certain reputed brands only. FSSAI certificate can be manipulated by any means. more
It is right time, a debate has come up on olive oil.It is no better than our own UN REFINED COCONUT OIL. As some one has said, only food grown in your own STATE/ COUNTRY are good, since they are grown in the same soil and climate, in which you are grown. Pl donot go in for imported refined oilwhich may contain GM ingredients. and our FSSAI is silent if the GM CONTENT is less than 5% more
Go to any Big Bazaar Outlet and you will find more than half a dozen import Olive Oils in varying measures PET/Glass Bottle & Cans. There is Figaro, Borges, Leonardo, Disano, Gaia...imports from Italy. Not to be left out Modi also jumped into fray buying seeds and crushing and blending it with other oil to keep the cost low. Del Monte another MNC from India is also trying to reap rewards from the Upper Middle Class's craving for a rich and healthy cooking medium. Your fitness actually depends on your life style, exercising etc. People of Gujarat have been for long using Groundnut Oil as cooking medium which is said to he very heavy cholestrol former but people of Gujarat live beyond 60 & 70 years age. more
Dear Sir, correctly said. We have seen our parents and grand parents. They have taken food without any hesitation and worked hard. Physical exercise was main time pass for them. Now people are entertaining themselves with mobile, TV and pubs. Physical activities reduced drastically. Ultimately its we who can take care ourselves. No matter which oil we are using. more
