Can fssai please confirm if use of ethylene in ripening has been made legal. Bihar govt is promoting it.

Use of Calcium Carbide to produce acetylene gas to ripen fruits is banned and illegal. Use of Ethylene is NOT and is advised to be use for artificial ripening through controlled usage. The challenge is that the implementation of this ban order is with States. I do not know how use of carbide for ripening fruits will not cause harm. This is a substance for use in fertilizer. It is banned in few states and also PILs have been filed to ban it's use but the vendors use them rampantly. There was a programme in Zee News few days back focussing on this subject also. Continued exposure to such mild traces of carbide can also lead to cancer. more

For a long time, green bananas are being ripened by Carbide which reacts with water to produce acetylene and traces of ethylene, which is enough to ripen the fruits. There has been no untowards incident due to this. Ethylene is a natural plant hormone involved in senescence of plants and fruit ripening, hence it should be harmless. more
