We need answers on severe breach of citizen privacy
The controversy over the use of spyware Pegasus by unidentified entities to violate the privacy of some Indians highlights multiple risks. We still don’t have a personal data protection legislation though it’s about two years since Supreme Court emphatically upheld the citizen’s fundamental right to privacy. The apex court verdict was all encompassing. Not only did it set limits on state intervention, it also pointed out the state has an obligation to safeguard the fundamental right to privacy of individuals.
Given the radical evolution in technology, the existing legal architecture is all but useless.
Attendant to a legislative framework will be the creation of a data protection regulator. The quality of the regulator will be critical in upholding the apex court verdict on privacy.
In the interim, we do need credible answers on who used to violate citizens’ fundamental rights.

Spyware is interfering in the privacy of individuals and the government needs to take step to protect its citizens. The intelligence of IT people should be utilised for the purpose. more

The privacy of every individual is being infringed on a regular basis in different ways. This needs to be taken seriously and urgently by legislature to promulgate a law to preserve individuals privacy with strict punishment for infringing the same and more so if the information is made public more

There is no privacy for any of the social media sites, TV channels. Even Google, if we visit a particular site, pushes related sites for us to view. All said and done, what we see, write is upon surveillance and anyone can be easily tracked. Few cases of Aadhar data leakages have been reported. So the data is not secured! There needs a strict privacy Law in place quickly. more

Who will do the brainwork? There is no think-tank in India. People are busy omly in Ram mandir, beef vigilantism et al! That is why, even after 72 yrs of Independence, we are classified as a corrupt and developing country. Not a single govt. Dept. Is free of corruption and competence and efficiency is at rock bottom. A benevolent dictator is required to change the country. more
