Guarantee is meant to Replace the product for the limited period, with some excusion. Whereas, Warranty can be longer period to repair the apparatus. You can find few products come with 6 months Guarantee and 1.5 years warranty. I bought SONY DIGICAM in 2007 from Malaysia. It came with Limited Guarantee only in Singapore. But while enjoying the Camera fell in the water, but I immediately removed it, but by the time it was already spoiled and non usable. After coming back to India, I went to Sony Centre in Bangalore, they inspected and promise to get it replaced with similar model within a month, and they stuck to their words. Then I asked him, why this difference. In India you sell as warranty. The answer was shocking but true, that we Indians are expert in Fake claims and thus comes as warranty. But on case basis we replace also as OBLIGATORY. more  
The consumer protection act should help the customer, but should not be ambiguous to give escape route for the manufacturer or supplier. more  
No supplier/manufacturer of products do not replace the product in spite of warranty or guarantee in India. But they go on repairing / replacing only parts which is time consuming and troublesome for the consumer. Lodging of complaints and corrections go on and one day they say warranty expired. Why cant they replace the product under warranty if there is a defect. I have taken much of the trouble for samsung Fridge for about four years. more  
If Local Circles can help, let us have a system (simple to access) for rating by customers of articles (it is already there, but a bit complex to access & rate). Then, it must be mandated that all products (say ACs, Washing machines etc) are required to display rating of Product, Service Agency (each agency with address). This will take quite a bit of effort, but can force companies to brace up. "System", Consumer Courts, babus are only adding complexity, not to be used unless necessary. We can start with expensive products, then move to mixies, ovens etc. more
