Adulteration in Amul products?

On 14th September 2016 I bought 1 L (905 gm.) tin container of Amul Pure Ghee bearing Batch No. GAA2451 and packing date 1st September 2016, from D'Mart. After opening the container, I found a foul smell in the product. I lodged a complaint with Amul's customer care by calling toll free No. 1800-258-3333 under complaint No. 87825 dated 19th September 2016.

Despite regular follow-up, my complaint was not attended by Amul. Then I looked at Amul's annual report for financial year 2015-16 and came across with some astonishing facts.

Amul is a ISO 22000-2006, 9001-2008, BIS, APEDA and USFDA requirements accredited company and their products are FSSAI approved.

In the financial year 2015-16 Amul paid Rs. 661 per Kg. of milk fat procured and the cost of Milk procurement was Rs. 32,263,481,000 and accordingly, total fat procured works out to 48,810,107 Kg.

If we refer to attached table indicating sales of various Amul products mentioned in their 2015-16 annual report and their fat contents, we observe that in 2015-16 they sold products containing more than 66,772,387 Kg. fat.

These figures do not include fat contents of 994 MT of Whole Milk Powder, 5,123 MT of Whey Powder and 146 MT of RUTF sold in FY 2015-16, as I could not get fat content data of these products.

Also, these figures do not include fat expectedly present in nearly 4,380,000,000 litres of milk sold by Amul in FY 2015-16. At an average of 3%, this volume of milk was expected to contain nearly 157,200,000 Kg. of fat.

Accordingly, their fat procurement in FY 2015-16 was 48,810,107 Kg. only, but they sold their products containing more than 66,772,387 Kg. fat, i.e. 17,962,280 Kg. more that that they procured?

If we include 157,000,000 Kg. of fat which was expected to be present in the milk sold, total excess of fat sold works out to 193,162,280 Kg.

The question arises, what was the source of this additional 193,162,280 Kg. of fat sold by Amul in FY 2015-16? Are they selling adulterated products? And if yes, what is the significance of all their accreditations and approvals? Are these for name sake only?

I am looking for a clarification and will be happy if I my perception that Amul's products are adulterated, could be proved wrong.

It is not expected on the part of AMUL. more
During recent sale on Jabong (19 & 20 Oct 2016), they had put a two page advertisement with asterisk mark offer of 15% cashback on HDFC bank card. With usual T & C condition apply. They did not bother to mention or found place to specify what is the maximum ceiling on cashback. Does not it amount to unfair practice on the part of seller as he has hidden the fact under asterisk mark. can anyone in the group highlight what the rules say in this regard. more
Dear Mr. Anthony Dmello, that exactly is my question. What is the significance of ISO accreditation and FSSAI approval? How much time do we expect the product manufactured on 1st September to be spoiled when bought on 14th September? Also, the retailer was reputed D'Mart and not a road side local store that we can expect a mischief. more
Dear Mr. Manoranjan Mohanty, I may not have good knowledge about Milk procurement but you could have enlighten the readers of this forum by your knowledge after reading Amul's annual report for 205-16, in which they clearly mentioned that they procured 71 Crore Kg. of milk during FY 2015-16. And also that, their executive confirmed that the batch number and date of manufacturing was correct. And if there was renumbering of Packing date, there could have been a sticker or something whereas the batch No. and date of manufacturing mentioned on the container was inkjet printed. If you are not convinced, please buy Amul Butter, abundantly available in the market and smell it to find if it has buttery or a foul smell. more
One needs to ensure the product is being properly stored as per requirement as this could be one of the reasons for spoilage. Are Indian companies/warehouses following proper disposal procedures of expired products? If not these products could very easily fall into the hands of unscrupulous people & recycled by reprinting packaging/expiry dates. I would think twice before suspecting an ISO certified company like Amul, having worked in a top international dairy abroad. more
