Air Conditioning Services Standards

Yesterday three persons were killed here in Chennai because of asphyxiation caused by a gas leak from the air conditioner.

Can we get Consumer Ministry to work on forming standards for air conditioning services in India?

If there is something in place already its very ineffective because no one here follows. more

It is a tragic matter .Though it is important to discuss here as this will be a warning to othe A/C users : 1. Suspected of Gas Leak - Carbon monoxide due to snag in the air conditioner . 2. A/C was operating on Genset following power outage and Voltage fluctuation. 3. The electric surge brought on by the operation of Genset and resumption of power supply would have burnt the transformer normally made of plastic leading to leakage of gas & noxious chemicals. So let us be forewarned not to Use A/C units when there is Voltage fluctuations . The attached newspaper clip from "The Hindu "that appeared on 3rd October will give more details . more
When the gas is dangerous, government should put some restriction in use. more
The entire refrigerant gas has leaked out from my 2 A.Cs twice. But the condenser unit is located outdoor. So, no danger of asphyxiation is there. The accident stated by you is a freak accident. To understand how it happened, please provide me give the following information: 1. Size of the A.C. unit (tonnes) 2. Qty. of gas filled initially (cylinders/ cu.m.) 3. Was the gas leak inside a confined space i.e. a closed space where there is no cross-ventilation? I can then suggest the remedies. I am also interested in investigating this case--- a rare one. Can you please scan and send me the news item on my e-mail:safetysaran@gmail.com? Thanks. more
As per my experience, there is no standard frame work. A few big companies train their people to do the job following all guidelines framed by the company itself or by the certifying agency. But majority are not following. I had a tussle with Voltas. Their people are totally rotten and no exposure on such activities. It may be made mandatory, company to get certified by any accredited agency for servicing works. Govt. agency like BEE, Ministry of Power, can take a step in this regard. Chandan Saha. FIE more
