Anshu's post in Value Shopping circle

Just read her post on where to buy Olive Oil in value shopping circle. My question is can someone elaborate on types of olive oil and what are they best used for. Even I am contemplating switching to all olive oil cooking but want to know what's for what and is that the right thing to do.

Anshu: not sure if you are in this circle but I would also like to know where to buy it at best prices in noida. more

Adding to the above discussion, I would like to point out that there are 3 broad classifications of olive oils available in the Indian market- Extra Virgin, Pure & Pomace. While the Extra virgin variant is the cold-pressed (first squeeze) of the olives & used primarily for salad dressings/ to be had raw, the Pure Olive oil suits Indian style of cooking best & can be heated without loosing much of its beneficial properties. The Pomace variant is a blend of all the left over olive pulp with other oils and is not suitable for human consumption ( sadly since it is the cheapest variant, it is most popular in India!!) more
FOR MR. NARAYAN CHOPRA & ASHMITA. Olive Cultivation in India Olive Oil has been considered the Healtiest Cooking Medium. The main hurdle in the way of mass and popular consumption of olive oil is its exorbitant price to ordinary Indians. One liter is normally in the price range of INR 600 to 1000 (around US$ 10 to 13) and this is certainly beyond the capacity of the majority of the Indian population. Though the import duty was reduced to 7.5 % from 45 % some years ago, the price of olive oil still remains much higher than other edible oils available in the market. Apart from the upper echelons of the social hierarchy who have the awareness and the money, olive oil has been beyond the reach of the average Indian. Now, Because of this Health Benefits. Olive Trees are being planted in all states to reduce the Import of Olive Oil. Many traditional Indian oils have been banished from health-conscious kitchens. The fact is that each one of them provides a different health benefit. Coconut oil It's impossible to imagine anything from the kitchens of Kerala without coconut oil - be it crisp banana chips or the vegetable curry. Mustard oil This one is to Bengali cooking what coconut oil is to Kerala cuisine. No amount of bad press against mustard oil will make a Bengali use anything else for macher jhol or even the humbler aloo posto PEANUT oil is high in monounsaturated “good” fat, and low in saturated “bad” fat, which is believed to help prevent heart disease and lower cholesterol. However, in animal studies, peanut oil has been shown to clog arteries, and this would increase the risk for heart disease. I have been able to Answer your Question partially. Regards more
I have one question: It is recommended all over the world that the local produce is most suited for people living in that environment. Going by this, wouldn't peanut oil or sesame oil or mustard oil be better suited or equally suited for people living in India rather than Olive oil? more
Mr. Narayan Chopra. Here is some answer. Olive oil we get it in Army Canteen, but it is imported. As far as my knowledge goes it is Imported. You can check up from any good Grocery shop. But some thing on Olive Oil: Ques. If olive oil is high in fat, why is it considered healthy? Answer From Dr. Donald Hensrud, M.D. The main type of fat found in all kinds of olive oil is monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). MUFAs are actually considered a healthy dietary fat. If your diet emphasizes unsaturated fats, such as MUFAs and polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), instead of saturated fats and trans fats, you may gain certain health benefits. MUFAs and PUFAs may help lower your risk of heart disease by improving related risk factors. For instance, MUFAs may lower your total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. MUFAs may also help normalize blood clotting. And some research shows that MUFAs may also benefit insulin levels and blood sugar control, which can be especially helpful if you have type 2 diabetes. But even healthier fats like olive oil are high in calories, so use them only in moderation. Choose MUFA-rich foods such as olive oil instead of other fatty foods — particularly butter and stick margarine — not in addition to them. And remember that you can't make unhealthy foods healthier simply by adding olive oil to them. Regards more
