Are bank txn charge and NPA losses linked

there is a psu bank strike today and below is a list of things to know most interesting of them being that bank employees are saying bank transaction charges are being levied on consumers to reduce NPA losses. This circle must take up this cause. Surprised you all haven't

5 things to know about today's bank strike

1) Cheque clearances, NEFT/RTGS transactions as well as deposits/withdrawals at branches of public sector banks will be affected. However, online banking transactions will not be impacted, a banking executive said.

2) Operations at private sector lenders such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank are expected to be normal except delay in cheque clearances.

3) Besides opposing the government's consolidation move, other demands of unions include a no write-off policy for non-performing assets (NPAs) of corporate loans and declaration of wilful default of loans as a criminal offence.

4) A top union leader said the government should provide overtime for additional work during demonetisation. He also suggested that banks should not pass on the burden of corporate NPAs to bank customers by hiking charges.

5) However, the critical operations of public sector banks like data centres will remain open to facilitate online transactions, the banking executive added. more

No, not at all. Banks lacks weapon to fight the NPA. Empowering the Banks will help in improving the health of Banking industry. more
This means there has been no accountability in the PSU banks for NPAs and the loans have been granted and disbursed on considerations other than merit of individual cases. As usual the government will pass the blame on systems etc and the common man has to pay taxes that will be ultimately used to nurse the banks back to health, AND the same thing will be repeated again and again. A real sorry state of affairs. And now on top of that there is lower interest on SB accounts and charges for banking services!!! more
Restructuring of PSU Banks is underway, which is a very sensitive and tough decision, but for overall benefit of the Industry and Nation.. While banks are looking for ways and means to enhance their incomes in this period of major write-offs, when nothing much is expected as support from Government. In the past managements / staff took wrong decisions (deliberate and otherwise) may be in connivance with even political heads because such big ticket loans to corporates can only happen in such a scenario.. Now the reformist government / contrarian views are playing the environment, hence, such logics and issues. Private sector banks already charge such amounts on every aspect of business, hence, their returns have always been better, now the PSU banks also have to maintain independent streams of incomes for viability and profitability. Mergers and acquisitions will give long lasting solutions.. reinventing business strategies is more important than whimsically fixing charges on transactions.. Probably the Corporates are using the Bank unions to further their dirty tricks and derail the plans of Government. Firmness, Tacitness and Reinvention are going to define the future of the lifeline of Indian Economy more
Whats happening is that banks are accumulating NPAs over time, and "adjusting losses" from the customer every year. They should close NPAs every year, and adjust losses against profits. They want to pocket the profits and pass on losses to customer. If banks abroad are able to manage on 1-2% margins, how is it that Indian banks need 4-5%? Excess manpower, too many branches, too much paperwork, almost nil work per employee (I find this non utilization much more in private banks than PSU banks). We need undertake an industrial engineering study on banks, of course, Govt needs to pay for it. more
