BIS and Consumer Affairs must act on Right to Repair

2 years back I believe there was consultation and survey in the circles on service standards in India. Nothing has been done by BIS that I am aware. Not sure if this is even a priority for them. I had requested that there should be servicing standards such that if I want my old samsung tv to be repaired 4 years from purchase, company cannot deny it and lure me to buy new version because they dont have parts.

I am pleased to let u know that while BIS in India didnt do anything the European Commission EC is set to introduce a series of "RIGHT to REPAIR" laws coming into effect from 2021. The new rules will mean replacement parts will have to be purchaseable after 10 years you bought the item.

Can consumer affairs ministry bring it into India at the same time as the EC?

GOI must ensure right to repair through bill in parliament and enforce at the earliest. more
I do not thing BIS has role to play. The consumer affairs ministry should take effective steps in the right direction of European Commission (EC). more
All Companies that manufacture capital good or consumer durable, keep up dating the technology and phase out out dated technology and stop manufacture such out dated goods. Once the model is out dated and stop manufacturing parts or components for such models also stops. This happens world over. a policy for repair can be made, but how well it will work out is the question. A white good manufacturer has to keep up grading the technology and come out will new models other wise surviving in the highly competitive market is out of question. more
Yes, there should be a life of any instruments like Capital goods. Govt. of India should frame a policy including such features that can benefit the consumers. Now a days consumers are at the mercy of Manufacturers as it's a common phenomena to deny service to repair and non availability of spare parts. Such bad practices should be stopped and the consumers should be given an opportunity to use it for a specific period. Simultaneously minimum price of the product after a period of varous slabs should also be fixed instead of flat rate without making an assessment. more
This initative will go a long way in reducing rampant consumerism, a leading contributor to degradation of planet earth! more
