Boost food & Beverage Production , Sales , Profit:

Result : Wastage or overeat ? Both
Mindless to let food go waste .
Greed as well as justification to the amount paid to satiate ones taste and overeat .

Food : Hotels and caterers keep increasing the menu items to give a grand picture of the spread of food . We also opt for it to satisfy our Ego .

Of course it is the responsibility of the food suppliers to see that the food is not wasted on the plates. We do see some caterers in wedding lunches / dinners carefully serve small portions and wait for helping to be called by guests . That is a good process , food is not wasted . And nothing is left over as the cooking goes on in a continuous process . Extra food is prepared in no time gauging the arriving crowd.

Beverages : The manufacture and consumption of beverages has increased multi fold, not in proportion to the increase in population. Mainly through their aggressive advertisement campaign.

One of simple strategies is to keep increasing the quantity of soft drinks and aerated water sold : sold in 150ml 40 years back  200ml  250 ml  300ml  400ml  500ml  600 ml. now to 750 ml. Mind you all these are not promoted as Family pack. Then there is the story of family pack growing from 1 liter to 2 and 1/2 litres. At least in the family pack may be stored for subsequent use .

But in the case of the smaller pack the manufacturers are influencing our thoughts to fall into their pattern of either consuming more or wasting. Whatever we do the profit goes to the manufacturer.

Ministers decision is fair enough.What can the Government can do?

It is in our hands to place orders or buy stuff that is just sufficient, or may be very little more say 5% than the required.

Don’t fall for the aggressive adds that seem to convince and guide you in the wrong path to consume more .

It is the responsibility of Particularly every parents and to a certain extent the grand parents [if their words carry weight ] to subtly make the growing minds aware of these advertising methods and avoid them falling into the trap.

We should ensure that wastage and environment damage is subject brought to school and everyone is educated in it. They should be tought, how to minimize wastage and environment pollution. This shall help eradicate lots of such issues. Like: -- Keeping engine of car running in idle condition -- wastage of fuel and pollution -- Water is spilled, as if we have ample water -- Electricity is consumed, even if there is no much of use out of it. -- etc. more  
Wastage of food in marriages/ parties in hotels etc. are national loss. We produce food grains after lots of labour, investment and utilisation of water. Let there be no wastage, when lakhs of people are sleeping without food. more  
Warehouses are raided by rats where food is lost. I remember FCI mismanaged storage of grain and suffered huge loss of stored grain when the poor were starving. Also ration shops are not distributing fairly and people are not getting their quota of promised (free) rice.
