Personally would recommend not to use the over the counter medications. Treatment- a. Steam inhalation, b. Warm saline gargles, c. Plenty of fluids, d. Hot soups, e. Antipyretics as and when required, f. Plenty of rest. Many doctors prescribe antibiotics. What we need to understand is that common cold is a viral syndrome. And antibiotics have no effect on viruses. So the antibiotics are just to prevent a secondary bacterial infection, which can be avoided by the above treatment. Be aware of this fact. It saves you from unnecessary antibiotic exposure. And also helps the community at large because such antibiotic exposure only increases drug resistance, an increasingly common problem that doctors, and therefore the patients now face. Most cold symptoms usually go away within a week. If you still feel sick after 7 days, if you develop breathlessness, see your doctor to rule out other medical problem that can mimic a cold- sinusitis, pneumonia, allergies. Some ways to avoid common cold- • Always wash your hands. Use paper towels instead of sharing cloth towels. • Use instant hand sanitizers • Disinfect commonly touched surfaces. • Choose smaller daycare classes for children. • Avoid smoking, it makes you more vulnerable. • Eat yogurt, it contains beneficial bacteria that helps prevent colds. • Get enough sleep more

NIDHI, Cold remedies: What works, what doesn't, what can't hurt There's no cure for the common cold. But what about cold remedies that claim to make you feel better faster? Cold remedies: What works If you catch a cold, you can expect to be Down for one week. But that doesn't mean you have to be miserable. These remedies may help: • Water and other fluids. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which can make dehydration worse. • Salt water. A Warm Saltwater Gargle — 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-ounce glass of warm water — can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat. Do it 3 to 4 times a day. • Take Steam Inhalation with Vicks Vaporub put in the Hot water. Gives you relief • Saline nasal drops and sprays. Over-the-counter saline nasal drops and sprays combat stuffiness and congestion. • Unlike nasal decongestants, saline drops and sprays don't lead to a rebound effect — a worsening of symptoms when the medication is discontinued — and most are safe and nonirritating, even for children. • Hot soup. Hot soup might help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils — immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus, possibly helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining. • Over-the-counter cold and cough medications in older children and adults. Nonprescription decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief, but they won't prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have some side effects. If used for more than a few days, they can actually make symptoms worse. In U.S. safe medicine is Tylenol. I usually take that when I get cold (Normally I do not get cold In summers you get cold because of drinking cold iced water, which I do not do in U.S. also. Secondly in and out of AC rooms to the outside heat.) If a cough lasts after your other cold symptoms have resolved, see your doctor. In the meantime, try soothing your throat with warm lemon water and honey & Ginger and humidifying the air in your house. Saline warm water Gargles. Cold remedies: What doesn't work The list of ineffective cold remedies is long. A few of the more common ones that don't work include: • Antibiotics. These attack bacteria, but they're no help against cold viruses. AVOID ASKING your doctor for antibiotics for a cold or using old antibiotics you have on hand. You won't get well any faster, and inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to the serious and growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. • Over-the-counter cold and cough medications NOT TO BE USED. more
cold that takes "10 or more days to resolve" could be asthma, consult asthma specialist dr vikram vinayek 9818887977 or cold that "goes into the chest" could also be asthma. more
