Electronic BP Machines are junk

Friends I want to let you know that the Electronic Blood Pressure machines available in the market like Omron etc are absolute junk and if any of you are using them, you must get rid right away. The results from these machines are grossly misleading and will put you on the wrong track.

I am sharing this info in good interest of the community and have no association with any seller of bp machines.

If you have had good experiences with electronic bp machines, do share your experience with name of brand and how do you know its accurate. more

There is a tradeoff between price & quality. Moreover, no two reading can be expected to be identical. This is because each device has some uncertainty in accuracy, reputability and consistency. This is complicated by the fact that your BP may itself change. If you repeat the readings too soon, your arteries would not have recovered from the previous pressurisation effect. This is not to discourage you from monitoring your blood pressure. But do not overdo it. more

Blood pressure should be checked either by a doctor or his assistants only. Unfortunately some patients are too obsessed with their BP and keep checking ever so frequently. The anxiety involved in the process itself can give a false high reading. Moreover, the positioning of the cuff, and the pressure exerted while tying the cuff, in the case of the electronic gadgets, influence the reading. Electronic instruments are very sensitive; any error in the placement or physical pressure will give wrong reading. Hence my sincere advice is to get your BP checked by a doctor or a nurse, once in a way, that too after total relaxation of around half an hour after reaching the clinic/hospital. more
It is a problem with many bio-medical diagnostics. I got my blood sugar tested (both fasting and PP), on the same day at four different laboratories(including a glucometer - 'Roche' at my residence). Time spread for fasting samples was about 45 min., so also for PP samples - all were substantially different (beyond 5%). Returning to the problem of BP monitors - I have seen that a machine gives fairly steady(reproducible) readings after first 3 readings are discarded. However, I am yet to arrive at any scientific reasoning behind this. more
