GST charged on Discounted items (Sale Items)
Yesterday we went to Shoppers stop in Panvel and bought some clothes which were under 50% off. when i received the invoice, i was surprised to see that they charged tax separately. I asked billing person that when full price (MRP) includes GST, how can they charge Tax separately on 50% off items (the tax will also reduce by 50%), but he was unable to reply properly. I, then checked the invoice again and found that they have clearly bifurcated basic price and tax as follows: full price Rs 1499 (including 5% GST), Basic Price (before tax) is Rs 1427.62, 50% of it is Rs 713.81 (in inv it was Rs 712.**). so they had to charge 5% GST on this price, and they did. they charged Rs 17.5* (2.5 %) as CGST and same amt as SGST in PRINT. The Total as per THEIR OWN INVOICE should have been Rs 749.50 But i was surprised to see that the total was Rs 786.** ie they charged Full Tax on Full Tax (on MRP). When I asked explanation of this, they simply could not answer it.
It clearly means that all the Malls (yes, all the malls) are cheating customers by doing this. Concerned authorities are required to take note and take suitable action. more

As long as cash is accepted in shops, billing can be avoided. Shop keepers will make more money and rob the government. This is a loophole and the dealer / retailer makes more and pockets the money which he never billed collected as tax and will get richer, as the customer is "only" paying MRP. The MRP includes the tax which the trader never billed. The consumer must reduce 4% tax, if bill is not raised before making payment. more

Its not a new thing being practised now,so lets not blame it on GST period. Even VAT used to b charged on the entire amount in spite of discount,it used to be clearly mentioned VAT Extra. more

Whatever said , people need to be clarified at every point by experts . Rather than giving a huge declaration about GST with technical jargon which can be understood by the specialist . We don't want to be specialists , but want to understand the system and know where our money goes. it will be welcome to clarify every single doubt like that of Girish to keep the common man educated. more
