MRP Issues Submission

With your participation, citizen pulse on three MRP issues has been shared with Department of Consumer Affairs. If you have additional MRP related issues you have observed, do share. Below are the details:

1) eCommerce sites to disclose item MRP tag as an image when listing the item for sale

2) Citizen use medical devices to be brought under packaged commodity rules

3) Strengthening of enforcement so products like water bottles, packaged drinks/foods don't sell above MRP at restaurants, hotels, multiplexes, airport, any other public places, etc.

We are hopeful that the Department will take actions on these issues. Detailed information on surveys is available via below media links:

Railways produces its own drinking water and eatables with fixed MRP. They need regular advertisements on the platforms and within the trains to inform consumers not to pay more than the printed price. In the event of a complaint, the complaint redress mechanism must be displayed on the bill, on the food rate chart, and the advts in the trains and the platform. Elsewhere, the govt should ban products of the same company within the same territory, say, National Capital Territory of India, sold with different MRP - e.g. different for hotels and a retailer, and big bazaar. There should be stiff punishment under packaged commodity rules. In the case eCommerce, companies are selling products with short shelf life or expiry date but without informing consumers, at times with discount. They must inform at the same time about the remaining short expiry date and the discounted price on this account. In the case of medicines, the hospitals who purchase medicines for emergency stocks from manufacturers must not charge more than 25% of the ex-factory price (just to meet with the administrative cost), being a social cause. All such medicines must be bar coded by the hospitals in public and private sectors for use at the time of dispensing. more

After the introduction of MRP the profits of retailers has touched sky. There is no check on the higher limit of MRP. In many cases its' even more than double the actuals. more
The cost of snacks and beverages in multiplexes , Airports are extremely high. There needs to be some control over this. Hopefully the point mentioned regarding strengthening of enforcements so products like packaged water /drinks etc. do not sell above MRP at multiplexes, airports etc., will bring some sanity to these prices. more
