nestle pasta found unsafe after Maggi

Mau (Uttar Pradesh): After Maggi noodles, Nestle's pasta has now landed in trouble as its samples, tested at a state-owned food testing laboratory, were found to be carrying lead beyond the permissible limits, a state government official said today.

Pasta samples collected from Nestle distributor -- Sriji Traders -- in Mau on June 10 were sent to a government food testing laboratory in Lucknow, said Arvind Yadav, Designated Officer at Food and Drug Administration Mau.
"After Maggi, the sample of macroni pasta was taken from Mau and sent to National Food Analysis Laboratory, Lucknow in which the lead was found to be much more that the permissible limit," he said.

"According to report received on September 2, they failed the tests," the officer said.

"The standard limit is 2.5 PPM (parts per million) while it has been found to be 6 PPM. The letter informing the Nestle company sent at its Modinagar address has come back here undelivered," Mr Yadav said.

Mr Yadav also showed the undelivered letter to media.

"On the basis of the report this food product now comes under the 'unsafe food category," he said.

"The report has been sent to the FDA Commissioner (Lucknow) on October 12 for sanction to lodge a case and in case it is received it will be filed in the court of the CJM here," Mr Yadav said.

The official, to questions, said, "It can also lead to banning the product."

"They (Nestle) were sent a letter over a month ago intimating them about the results. They had a month's time to appeal against the test but the letter sent by the FDA was not received by the company and was returned here," Mr Yadav said.

District Magistrate Vaibhav Srivasatav also said, "The sample which has failed the test is of June and we will taken immediate action on the directives... we are in touch (with the authorities) on phone."

Nestle India Says Not Aware of the Test

Meanwhile, Nestle India today said its products are safe for consumption and it was not aware of any test.

"We are not aware of any analysis reports for Pazzta supposedly picked up from Sriji Traders," said a Nestle India spokesperson.

"The Pazzta manufactured by us is 100 per cent safe and there is absolutely no concern on lead. Therefore, we need to see the contents of reports and we also need to confirm whether these supposed tests have been conducted at FSSAI Notified and NABL accredited laboratory that has the expertise and is certified for testing lead under the Food Safety and Standards Act," Nestle India said. more

Our family has been using nestle products since decades and they are of highly original and standard quality. You may all are aware of few unscrupulous laboratories ready to give any result you want and also some greedy people to do mischief to make some quick money. So, please purchase only from standard and reputed shops or malls where they give proper receipt and product will be original. for your satisfaction take it to testing by very reputed and standard laboratories by following standard sampling procedures even though it costs some money so that you can be sure of results. more
It sounds funny that first one after other lab finds Maggi unsafe and then samples at the many designated labs are found OK. At least one of the two parties-- manufacturer or the regulator are playing a dirty and dangerous game. Either the labs are not up to the mark or is is it that where ever there are elections (UP had panchayat elections going on), food prices soar or this type news starts hitting headlines. Ultimately, Govt. made a fool of it self with a class case etc. bla bla bla going for a toss. If there were issues, why the second tests at second accredited lab were not done and why samples were not picked up from their own premises? certainly a lot of questions for the department concerned to answer otherwise probably Nestle refused to bribe the inspectors and then the result. more
The food administration is playing a dangerous game. It tests only limits of compounds notified in the law. The Food administration has to borrow the entire list of hazardous compounds from european or american standards list. Then not only lead, but other elements and combinations will come to light. The aim and objective of constituting Food administration is to ensure that people of the country does not eat hazardous food. Keeping this aim they can term as hazardous any material found in european or US standards. Any qualified prohibition of production within this ambit will stand before a court of law notwithstanding whether such materials were notified in The Gazette of India or not. This is a technical field and the people enforcing the objectives are bound to pronounce whether a food is healthy or not. Not whether its constituents are listed in a notification or not. I find a large gap in this primary objective of employment. It is their duty to find literature on constituents prohibited anywhere in the world for reasons and compile a database of such materials as guidelines for immediate execution and future notifications. more
I also agree that company like Nestle should be trusted upon.I had a chance to see their production standards.they are excellent without any doubt or illpractise. more
I think it is very clear the accusation against Maggi the taste of India is nothing but a witch hunt in order to sweep the shelves clean for those new products that have political affiliations. more
