Price Increase in Spices due Kerala Floods

Many raw spices come from Kerala including green cardamom (elaichi), black pepper (kalimirch), nutmeg (jaiphal), dry mace (javantri), cloves (lavang), Dalchini, dry ginger (sonth), ), cinnamon (Dalchini), cumin (Jeera) and bay leaf (Tejpatta). Prices in Bhopal are increasing by 50-100%. Green cardamom which was available between Rs 500 and Rs 1100 / kg, is now priced between Rs 1000 and Rs 2000. Black peeper that used to cost around 500 is now Rs 1000/ kg. The rates of nutmeg and dry mace are Rs 1000 earlier it was Rs 500. The price of coconut has also hiked by 25% to 30 %.

Does this come under purview of Consumer Ministry or FSSAI or some other Department. We need action. more

Harpal Sir, I believe we already have the Committee in Place in almost all major towns of States. Like in Ahmedabad, Gujarat we have APMC (Agricultural Product Marketing Committee)..Profiteering by Merchants is nothing new but when the same is done with connivance where the body appointed to regulate price turns a nelson eye, it causes hardship for common public. In Delhi we have NAFED which took up marketing of Imported Toor Dal at subsidized price during the inflationary price rise of all Lentils in 2016. Nafed would park mobile Vans and sell the 500 gms, 1 kg & 2 kg packets conveniently parking it near Office areas. They broke the profiteers back by this market intervention. If common public is again staring at spice inflamation...NAFED and such other bodies constituted by Government should again start market intervention to regulate the price. I have no doubt you would have more experience through your active tenure in handling similar crisis during your assignment.Governments come and go but the Babus body continue to serve public and if the Leader is beyond impeachment, the staff would give their 100%. more
This comes under ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES act. To bring to book, the Whole salers, who want to make big money, GOVT should intervene and prescribe Limits for storage/ WARE HOUSES should not be allowed to extend credit on stocks stored with them. The spices board can talk with the authorities to give actual production, LOSS etc more
Govt can take proactive steps like printing warning against such practices in the aftermath of natural disasters..and also take punitive actions by sealing the premises of such unscrupulous traders and companies.. Why can’t we have a price ceiling concept for such situations?? more
Once the Stockists/Wholesellers smell the opportunity, they will use the floods excuse for short supply and fleece the consumers. Somehow this Government at Center has not been able to get a hang of Demand/Supply balancing. Ever since they came to power 4 years ago, consumer's kitchen budget went out of the window. First the common lentils ( toor dal price went through the roof) even moong, channa, urad and other lentils all went over century for a KG. Then it was the turn of Onions & Tomatoes...while consumers were still recovering from their Kitchen budget blues. Worst has been the Petrol Price inflationary hike which was disguised as Dynamic Pricing...in various Channel Debates, BJP spokespersons Vaibhav Aggarwal,Zafar Islam & other smart talking leaders glossed over Tax issue which raised the price when questioned why Petrol was not being brought under GST when majority of states were under BJP rule. Several excuses were floated...one being funds needed for construction of roads( as if the tolls were not enough). Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has rightly said that BJP and Congress are equally corrupt as they both follow similar agenda while attacking AAP which gave both these National Parties solid drubbing in the 2014 polls from which both are still smarting. more
Please suggest what the government should do in such a case. Should they start selling spices? Your suggestion will be very valuable. more
