Seeking official clarification on Service Charge....

A few weeks ago some friends joined in to have breakfast at the Hyatt Regency cafeteria.

The bill had included service charge. Our host asked the waiter to remove it and he returned with bill with SC excluded. So far, so good.

On enquiry, the waiter responded that actually it is left to customers as optional to pay SC or not to pay. He had no answer when asked, "how do customers get to know of this?"

He followed it with another remark, however, which could send customers on guilt trips, viz. "sir, the income of us as staff is reduced if guests do not pay service charge".

One hears of this in the USA galore, but never heard of this in India...... more

Sulphur dioxide and Carbon monixide pollution is very high in every city in India and many people in towns and cities are also suffiering from breathing ailments. I an not trying to justify Sterlite expansion. There are a lot of spheres where we have come to decide between growth and general health. It is a very difficult choice. However what we can do is to avoid unbridled Corporate expansionism and its greed and make them invest in proper safeguards. After all, what is the necessity of Industrial growth when people have to die for it?. more
Easy and non taxable income is cause of it. People with false prestige do not see the details in the bill. they simply pay. It is considered as insulting to peruse the bill . more
What we are not understanding is that Most of the service industries such as the hospitality industry including hotels, resorts and hospitals, education etc are all controlled by politicians who make huge money to context their elections. Since this is linked to the parties they get party support as well further if the party is in power they get their desires made in law. The way out is let there be a budget allocation to political parties based on their representation in the elected institutions and making political donations in any way is criminal in nature. more
@Shri Gopabandhu Mohapatra Ji, Sir, Govt has already done its part. Through a notification, it has made charging of service charge as an optional. Now it is the time for the consumers to assert their choice. In case you feel difficulty in asserting your choice, please raise the complaint appropriately. more
It is understood that TIP is indication happness of the customer. When they are happy with service they give TIP. Why service charge? and why it is made optional andwhat is the logic behind it. Is expenditure on service not included in price. more
Thanks Mr.SKV for the correct interpretation. more
