Tax rates on cars whats wrong

Hubby and I went enquiring for a new car last weekend in South West Delhi. on a vehicle with basic value of Rs. 12 Lakhs, one has to pay GST and other taxes of Rs. 5.5 Lakhs — a whopping 45%.

Add to that RTO Tax of Rs. 75,000. Shouldnt this be rationalised unless the Govt wants auto sector to RIP 🙏 more

Yes, 45% GST is a whopping amount! Tax collection at source, registration fees, road tax, cess, fast tag, logistics charge, insurance, extended warranty all make vehicles costlier by about 20% for let us say diesel run vehicles, which are preferred by buyers. But why not? After all see these individual transportation means as also polluting. Government right in charging the way they do, as otherwise, profiteering would be rampant among manufacturers, who promote privilege of a few over others with along with rights to pollute. No further than thus far, may be government's mantra, perhaps. Many still use public transportation, are okay. more
Recently I purchased Tata Petrol car. The price was ₹8,75,891 plus 28 % GST that comes to ₹11,13,000. Surprisingly, RTO, Kathua (Jammu Kashmir) charged me road tax on ₹11,13,000 not on ₹8,75,891. This is Tax upon Tax which the government promised that only one tax in the country while implementation of GST. Is the government aware of this fleecing of consumers? more
Shocking - if true..... Speaks volumes about policy framers.... Wonder what could be done to drive home the point..... more
Why did Chevrolet after promising 7 years of Free Servicing wind up and leave? Now Ford is also packing up to leave. Mitsubishi is not bringing new models in Indian Market. MG & KIA are for high end users. With Government fleecing end consumers - it is indeed RIP for Car Manufacturers. Why don't we Live in Peace rather than Rest in Peace? Because the Government tears us to Pieces. more
Yes. The Ex-show room price is above basic price by a margin of 32% to 44%. But the taxation has marginally come down after GST is introduced. Interested people will get the calculation on net. more
