Use of potter's diya in Deepavali in place of Chinese Lamps

While I agree with Mr Sanjeev Bedekar for using Potter's Diya during deepavali, lets us look at the advantages of using electric lamps for decoration;-
1. It does not pollute unlike smoke from diya.
2. Variety and better illumination.
3. Design and patterns covering larger area.
Cost effective.
Why not give incentive to Indian manufacturers (no excise/VAT, other tax rebates) this time to manufacture series lamps within country at affordable price and counter dumping of Chinese Stuff. more

It reminds me of this year's Ganesh Utsav, Chaturthi etc. celebrated in My Home Jewel, a gated colony of Hyderabad. Someone distributed statues of Ganesh ji made of mud free of cost. Most of the residents were tempted to install Ganesh ji in their houses. These were collected in a common truck hired by the society on the day of immersion in water. Similar practice may be adopted by temples in the vicinity. more
The Govt. gives enough incentives. It is the traders, who charge exhorbitant profits. Everyone wants to become rich overnight. It has become a custom for every business to charge more during seasons, festivals and take unto advantage of people who want to celebrate festivals. Consumers are sentimentally blackmailed. The Airlines/ Bus transport / fire cracker vendors / flowers and garlands - all these become doubly expensive during festival season. Let the Govt. first protect price,(to be charged) then only can all types of incentives will work. more
I feel Mr Mishra has missed the point why we transitionally use Diya . (a) Post Monsoon We find lost of moquitos and insects , We have been seeing lots of them die on Diyas, In that way Diya is working in creation of hygienic environment. (b) As per out old myths about hawan and diya , it not just spread light but also purify the atmosphere. Electric Lighting may decorate your house but effort and preservance we get from diya is absent. more
This is the right attitude! We should encourage production of better quality at lower cost than chinese goods. Fight competition! Look at this as an opportunity to enter the world market. Consumer is the king. Protection or boycott doesn't help! Do we want the potter to remain as potter for all teh generations to come? more
Dear Mishra Sir, While giving Indian manufacturers incentives to produce fairly priced Indian goods is indeed an attractive idea, it will take some time to implement, while Diwali is round the corner. I hope you realize that electricity mostly means thermal power in India, i.e., burning fossil fuel, which generates air pollution on a massive scale, perhaps a bit more than diyas. While this is currently unavoidable, let us use this resource for better purposes, while Deepawali is celebrated with the traditional "Deep". This festival is not about illumination, but about the cessation of evil. It is not, and should not be, about extravagance. It is certainly more than a few decades old. Encouraging, or at least not taking away the livelihood of, potters, is definitely a good step. They are artists, and should be given due respect, and we should preserve the traditions that help them earn their livelihood. Incidentally, Shailesh Sharma ji, have you heard of the Dev Deepawali festival of Varanasi? Please see a few photographs. more
