Why for heaven's sake did Modi start the 'Hindi' move now? When so many burning social and economic issues are to be tackled, raking up 'a old Hindi only' move, will destroy the government's ability to tackle the other important issues. It may be important for 'national unity' as perceived by BJP but this is not the time. There are other ways of dealing with national unity, which is inclusive of all elements.

Hope better sense prevails. Otherwise the poll victory will turn into a 'mirage'

I am a Kannadiga, born and brought up in Chennai. I learnt Hindhi privately. But I hate Hindhi because I have a feel that it is often compelled by Central government on non-hindhi speaking. Ex. Take LIC policy names. Why all the policy names in Hindhi? Why PSU banks forms/ challans in hindhi? Are non-hindhi speaking people are not indians or are they not paying taxes? Why their language is treated secondary to hindhi? Pushing of hindhi by govt really makes us to hate that language itself. Believing that a single language bringing unity is a myth. Recent example is Andhrapradesh (there are other contributing reasons for the split, though). Point is language is not such a powerful binding factor. Many people think that majority in India speak Hindhi. Actually it is not so. The government is not considering the speakers of Hindhi family languages (like bhojpuri, rajasthani, mewari) seperately. How wrong it will be to consider Kannada population as tamil speaking (because kannada belongs to Tamil family), so wrong is to consider all north indians as Hindhi speaking. Our country is of rich and glorious heritage. Government's focus on promoting a single language will reduce importance of other languages, slowly there will not be takers for the language, the literature of the language will be lost. If literature is lost, the culture will also be lost. Remember, growth is always in the path of inclusiveness. Discrimination will bring hatred only. I wish govt protect and treat all languages equally. more
Until i heard this imposition i never hated anything other than congress but now iam forced to hate hindi language, hindi people, along with central govt. Pls understand center to be called a center should treat all languages equally. It is not a govt of only hindi belt unless they chose to be so.if all promoting languages is a concern promote all indian languages and not only hindi. Thank you for reading and hope center will stay as center. more
Please appreciate we can have this debate today or a year or even a decade later but we MUST HAVE IT . One practical suggestion though! We need to have a learned group of spokespersons with exposure and fluency to stand up convincingly for the need to PROMOTE Hindi&Indian languages against the invasion of English. We must have Hindi®ional Indian languages or else some one else' English language will colonize our minds first and then our lands too. I hope I answered your concerns. more
There are numerous practical advantages of promoting Hindi. I read one apt comment from one of my fellow reader of an online newspaper. He was from Tamilnadu. I would like to share that comment here with all as I consider it worth sharing - **Politicians are trying to twist the languages issue to suit their silly, flimsy and utterly selfish ends. I am a spoilt man as I had not learnt Hindi during my childhood thanks to the selfishness of DMK leaders and their stupidity and utter lack of concern for common citizens of Tamil Nadu. This resulted in humiliation for me when I went to work overseas with several colleagues from all over India - from Assam to Maharashtra and Kashmir to Kerala - everyone spoke in Hindi and I was a loner unable to decipher what they speak. Also my employer found that I am not able to communicate as well as other Indians (many of whom are not that good in English communication. Once I went for a driving test to obtain license in the UAE. I fumbled when the inspector a UAE national gave instructions in Hindi and he failed me. He told me go and learn your national language and come back as most UAE nationals understand Hindi but do not speak much of English. Of course the landscape is changing but during my days it was tough to survive without Hindi even in UAE let alone in Hyderabad or Gurgaon - places where I was transferred. All thanks to Karuna and his men who banished Hindi teaching from Tamil Nadu schools. One hopes Hindi is encouraged in TN so that our children and grandchildren have level playing field when they go to work outside the state. ** more
