Addressing Open Defecation on Railways Land

By pooling a fund from the Railways users, (say a 1 Rs.) on each travel, and managing the fund in a really professional way by taking help of the municipal bodies / Gram Sabhas & Panchayts and organisations which have already done /are doing commendable jobs in the field, to provide for clean toilets, away from the tracks, for the people living near the railways tracks, and if they do not use these, strict compliance of punishments/penalties, if we love cleanliness and pleasant sites while travelling. Travelling in Europe and other developed countries is such a pleasure. We only sigh while looking out when travelling in Europe, and sigh with anger and anguish while travelling in our own country (no offence! to improve things, one has to speak out). Nothing is impossible! more

We lack in service oriented technology driven ,open minded political party leadership. Slums are indicative of narrow. selfish political party bosses outcome more
...and it is still beautiful, beyond the territories that have been encroached upon, the temporarily settlements, becoming permanent, and destroying the aesthetics, the virgin beauty of the land, our diverse flora & fauna. At least, the land that has not been touched upon should be saved, and the grabbed land (asymetric / unaesthetic looking constructions), if not possible for taking back due to demographic / local political pressures, could at least be beautified to look pleasant to the eyes. I have seen in the cities and towns, fences have not worked very well. Material used is taken away, displaced and misplaced (even on bridges in Delhi) - unfortunately, I have not taken pictures of those places, where I saw this vandalism. more
Excellent comments, Sirs. more
You have said it Mr. Khare about the landscape in Europe .It is so beautiful . Our country side was full of beauty in the 50's and 60's till the advent of the plastic . Plastic swarmed the country side also like plague in the 80's. It was no doubt was so useful in packing all sort of food items and storing water while on tour. But we were not informed about the non degrability of plastic even after 2 centurie. The successive Government had other pressing problems and hardly any time and resources to pay full attention to this Environmental one. At least now we have scratched the tip of the "Ice berg ". As a child when I traveled in train I always enjoyed the colours on our countryside , green blue, white, red, orange . They were that of trees , flowers and birds like parrots, peacocks and wetland birds . I do see colours fluttering even now as the train treverses across the country side . The coulours are the colouful plastic bags that get stuck in the bushes and flutters in the wind. more
This menace is difficult to stop. Some measures may help such as, Education and awareness among the public. Fencing the land at vulnerable areas, enforcing penalty and punishment, putting prohibition boards at the boundaries, training and hiring local scouts for education and control, tie up with local bodies for erecting toilet complexes nearby, leasing out land for vegetable cultivation, creating recreation facilities and parks etc.. more
