A total of 713 trips of the South East Central Railway (SECR) have been cancelled till May 25 while 40 trips of the Northern Railways (NR) have been cancelled till May 8. This is due to coal shortage.

Can't we have electricity, which is generated from renewable sources, run the trains? Not enough money flowing where the sun shines, i.e. in the tropical countries, such as India, or even Africa. Heat stress could be alleviated using solar energy at least, leaving spare power from fossil fuels to power the trains. Pollution too, along with our dependancy on imported coal. The reason seems political, for the rich who buy their way forward escaping from any situation. Experience shows that enough is known about these facts, so change would happen when one experiences being in the chappals of the poor! For example, when more frequently flying executives travel by train, the train's toilets will get cleaner, since monetised demand would herald that change we all so wish happens miraculously. more
You can't have every thing. Have either Electricity or Travel by Train. more
No immediate substitute for trains, that transports masses over long distances, needing coal or diesel being converted into electricity, the latter within the locomotive engine. However, when metro train in Delhi is running on 35% renewable energy, then surely coal may be substituted with more electricity from other sources, such as the sun. Let us remember that the train is the most environmentally friendly overland travel option. more
due to heat productivity has come down. same for Railway. instead of 1/2 journey better not to travel for non work / intertreatment purpose. more
True that Railways can’t run their electric locomotives without power and thus are compelled to run coal trains to all the power plants but large cancellation of passenger services inconveniences people. Impromptu cancellation causes a lot of hardship. While I can’t really assess the cancellations , there must be a procedure by which inconvenienced people are otherwise compensated. more
