Climate Change and Disaster Preparedness

Untimely rains and floods, hail storms, earthquakes and tsunamis are all a result of what we are doing to the earth and specifically climate change.

The so many knowledgeable people on LocalCircles I request you to present what can be some solutions to avoid the impact and what should be done to be prepared for disasters. Most states dont even have basic infrastructure to handle floods like the one that just happened in my state Uttarakhand.

How do we get prepared?

Please please share your views and perhaps it can be escalated by some of us to the Govt and via localcircles also. more

Enemy on border can exploit their dams and hydro-projects to cause floods or to add to floods as is suspected from China in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and South-East countries. more
We can not always blame the population explosion for the climatic change. Even during olden days also there was disasters like cyclone, flood, drought, famine etc. At regular interval, there will be such disasters and we are now more prepared for such situations. more
Most of the disasters are due to over exploitation of nature by human for their convenience and comforts. The disasters in addition to loss of lives and property leads to expenditure of crores of Rupees towards damage control and restoration. Some of these disasters are happening every year regularly and still we are learning. We shall invest our money in prevention of such disasters instead of wasting them after the disaster happens. The Government and Authorities shall heed to the advise of scientists and technocrats and should not take them as anti development. On personal front, lifestyle changes are required like preventing/ reducing use of disposables, plastics; judicious use of resources like electricity, water etc. more
Disasters due to climate change has become a common feature even in developed countries like USA where population density is much less than ours. Only recently many parts of that country were flooded. Two years back even several parts of Canada were flooded. These are the results of over minting of the nature as per our will without caring for the repercussions and the entire globe has been rendered to natural disasters. Apart from this our country is facing many other factors inviting such disasters as discussed in the post. more
The density of the population of India is 464 per sq: km whereas U.P has 828 per sq: km. After creating Uttarakhand the density came down to 189 per km. Kerala on the other hand stabilizing its population growth and they expect negative growth by 2050. The need of the hour to produce fewer children. From 1967 I lived in UP, as I understand there are 13 dams and 2 proposed. Anyone would agree that dams for irrigation or power must be designed and built with every care that can be taken. Look at Maneri Bali or Tehri Dam. The disaster was waiting and found a bad time. No use crying now. Even Lucknow city was flooded in 1961 and 1971. What did they do? All these were done to feed the growing population and give them electricity. Less people, more facilities make life easy. more
