Doctor’s Prescription- Generics versus Branded

I remember LocalCircles in its survey asked whether peoples perception is that some Doctors get commissions and gifts from pharma companies and in some cases their chemists and the answer was a strong yes.

That is probably why the NMC law is completely prohibiting them prescribing any brands. Most consumers would rather know the exact brand and the salt name also on the prescription. That way if they can find/afford they take the brand. If they cant then they take alternate generic.

Can this be taken up with the Govt LC Manager? more

It would be over estimate to expect a busy doctor to write a medicine in both generic and brand name in the prescription. Even if Dr write the prescription so, it may not be easy for the patient to understand the prescription without the help of a pharmacist as writing of most of the Doctors is like “ LIKHE MOUSA PADHE KHUDA” more
Many a Medicines do not have Generic substitute. then what to do? more
Unlike most developed nations Indian medical system does take kickback for drug sales from Pharma. I know many honest Drs in India who do not let that influence their decision making but many who do. That is a sad thing for India. That said it is patient responsibility to ask your medical store if any generic or non name brand available for them. Like most of the world Drs are not responsible for this. Also remember this that most heart related medications like, Digitalis and for sure thyroid medication should not be taken in generic form. more
Manuel Aaron: I like this suggestion. For the last one year I have switched to Generic tablets. They are cheap and the same. Yet, there are many who do not know about generic alternatives, because the doctors do not tell them about it !! more
The fact is there are some medications that generic are not a good alternative. Such as cardiac related like dig, thyroid etc. They are make your blood levels unstable. Please take care. more
