Fair Access to Internet in India - Inputs Needed

Per recent media reports, telecom carriers in India are proposing to restrict fair access to the internet (Net Neutrality) by discriminating internet traffic on the basis of which services pay the most.

The telecom regulator of India (TRAI) is planning to recommend this change on April 22nd.

To illustrate, post this change, if Airtel doesn't like YouTube but wants to push its own video app -- it wants the right to offer that for free while charging you premium charges to access YouTube.

Such a move would be completely unfair and harm India's long term role in the global market. It will restrict internet access in India for the current and future generations and give rights to the telcos or ISPs to charge for specific services a citizen uses on top of it.

Internet is an important resource and vital to every other Indian citizen and must be kept free and protected under Net Neutrality to ensure fair and equal access for all and forever.

We would like to include the need for fair and free access to the internet in our Revised Telecom whitepaper so an immediate action can be taken by the Telecom Minister and Telecom Ministry to protect net neutrality and not allow the implementation of the recommendations of TRAI and Telecom Companies.

Please share any inputs you have on the subject and most definitely vote on the poll that will be posted soon.

Thanks,
Rajendra Pratap Gupta more

What was the licence condition when the service was given to the telecom operators... The licence was for providing the internet and thats what the operators should do...and the end decision should always be with the govt of India....simple as that... more
Strict no to "Airtel zero" and "internet.org"....I really do not understand whay is this debate at all... These telecom operators were given licence to provide telecom services and internet...It is nowhere mentioned in the licence that these players can restrict any specific content what a normal public wants to use..... One fine day suddenly these people come up with innovative idea to additionally charge people for the same content... This should not be allowed....No matter whether it is TRAI or DOT,they should ensure that the normal public do not get affected by its wrong decision... more
Allowing restriction on net neutrality will give a toy to the opposition....They will play it for the next 15 years....Dont allow operators to restrict the net neutrality...It will add to the revenue of some handful telecom operators and 1.2 billion of our population will suffer........A strict no here more
I am all in favor of net neutrality more
Respected Sir/ Members, After so much of big gap , now I am happy to interact with all of you. Net neutrality must be observed and right to have the choice of different providers with good speed. I will tell you sir, for the last 10 years I am waiting for Internet connection from BSNL. It is really painful. After repeated following up they seems to give the benefit to private players.
