Fire safety system in India

Multi-storied buildings are regulated under fire safety system. The major fire fighting method is through hydrant system where-in huge water pumping along with heavy duty water plumbing and spray system is installed at very high cost, several tens of laks of rupees. Societies are to provide huge water tank to supply water. The system is put under fire safety audit yearly/biyearly.

India should make statistical analysis on 'how many times the fire system was found operational when called for when fire took place. I am sure the probability of failure would be above 95%. If this is found correct or reasonably correct, then why to have a hydrant fire fighting system at all. In more than 95% cases of fire it is electrical short circuit responsible for fire. Why not we have improved electrical system (with spark proof fittings) in place and have it audited. more

By controlling the corruption while NOC and 100% witness interested of random witness by gov officer. more
Fire safety norms should be revised and strict compliance should be implemented. Fire officers and team should be trained to get adequate knowledge about latest trends in fire safety. Codes like NBC, IS should be revised to cover all important aspects of fire safety. Instead of simple recommendations, codes should clearly indicate key aspects of fire safety as mandatory. If I install a simple manual fire alarm system or only fire extinguishers along with hydrant system, I can easily get Fire NOC. Authorities should realise fire safety is not that simple. Maintainence of installed systems is most ignored part in India. Regular and genuine audits should be conducted to ensure safety is maintained. Awareness should be created to users. How many people know how to operate a fire extinguisher? How many people take fire drills seriously? General public should also realise the importance and try to understand some basics of safety. If I am going to occupy a property, I should be make atleast a general assesment about the level of safety. more
1) There is no need for statistical analysis. Waste of time. What is Bureau of Indian standards doing ? Make laws & raise technical standards that all textiles & other home use things made should be natural fire-resistant & non flammable type & promote awareness on what items are highly inflammable & what is non-flammable. Spend energy on these points. 2) Increased awareness will make businessmen NOT to open such fire prone restaurants & other business activity in such horrible conditions. 3) Surat textile markets are hotbed of fire. They are conjusted, with absolutely no fire extinguisher in the entire building. One spark, then entire building will get gutted with almost 3000 burt dead bodies, will be found for the lifts are horrible & staircases are steps to graveyard. Go there & see. You will be aghast. 4) Putting more restrictions i.e. fire fighters witholding certificates - will be like demonetization good for nation, but bad for political votes !!! NO one would ever take any initiative to make nation better. 5) Increasing the awareness & people for their own life safety will buy good & quality material & dump fire prone material. It will get self regulation. more
1) High rise buildings are always prone to fire risk. In a country where drinking water is scarcity, talking about fire water tanks & things, is meaningless. 2) Ensure that when buys or uses or purchases any thing for the house, they are non-flammable. People think cotton catches fire faster than polyester !! Improve the awareness on safety & safety products. 3) At least have smoke & heat sensors installed to give alarm enough to give you time to escape. With our narrow roads, depending upon fire brigade tanks to come is waste & meaningness 4) Human greed to earn extra $ $ $ makes to rent out to commercial services, who in their greed to optimise the area, have everything other than fire extinguishers (for they considered as space occupiers!!) 5) Fire fighters or municipal corporation should stop giving clearance certificates. Instead they should put up posters whether the building is safe or unsafe with some buidling ID, wherein people can log on internet, enter the property ID & see what is lacked there. It is for individuals discretion either to live or avoid such places. 6) People should be made responsible for their own life, blaming it on fire fighers is wrong & incorrect. 7) People willing going to such "fire houss" inspite of all their knowledge & education, it means they want to commit suicide. 8) Fire fighters should only give a checklist for each building for the owners to fill up & post it their compliance or noncompliance. Fire fighters to check at their routine time, ensure the correctness & declare it as safe or unsafe building 9) Minimum requirements - Emergency escape provision, number of combustible items in that building, fire extinguishers, smoke & heat sensors, maximum number of people permitted in that building / rooms, when it was verified, when it is next due date, all this information should be on the noticeboard (mandatory). Where the building owners did incorrect assessment, they should be penalized & money should be paid & building association members also to be penalized 50% of that amount to be paid from their wallets/pockets or personal bank balances. So that everyone is aware & knows their responsibilities 10) It is a lifelong curse to bear & carry that because of one's mistake lifes of 19-25 people are lost. Unfortunate in this case, the girl(s) who were celebrating their birthday happened to be their death day also. What will the parents remember in such cases.. very harsh & big tragedy befallen on them... They can neither celebrate birthday nor deathday !!!! 11) People should now take lesson learned from this published news, that whenever they enter any crowded place, they need to check all the above points given in Point No.9 & decided to spend time there or better to enjoy in an OPEN Dabba restaurant !!! more
It is very scary in India to stay in a high rise building if this is the commonest expected calamity .
I have seen that they never have fire fighting drills ,mock evacuation excercises and protocol in these big buildings .
Except for iso certification NABH certificate they are no documentation of fire fighting procedure.
Govt offices are the worst ,even secretariat in the capital does no5 have a document with a procedure . more
You may be right partially but multipronged prepRedness is needed.even in cars how many portable fire fighting cylinders are ensured in our country .Many methods of fire fighting depending on the cause like electrical ,liquid ,open fire ,gas ,chemical but a preparedness and a standard has to be set and law is obeyed.mere statistics does not de ide on the need of equipments as fires are unpredictable. more
