GARBAGE COLLECTION AND ENERGY GENERATION

In our area in Velachery, Chennai, in our street the person in charge of garbage collection, collects all the fallen leaves together in a corner and ignites them. They usually burn for about an hour and during that time the residents have to inhale toxic fumes leading to respiratory problems. In the month of February-March there are usually a lot of dried leaves fallen on the roads. If these dried leaves can be collected along with some cattle dungs and taken to some facility which is a bio-gas producing facility, then these can be additional generators of electricity. There is a vast land near Velachery called Pallikaranai which can accommodate such a bio-gas generation facility. I am sure such a pit will not occupy much space. There is a wind-mill research facility in this area which can also be given this responsibility. more

Coordination among the departments is essential.Best example is new roads and digging for telephone lines in many places. Electricity department cuts the branches of trees and leave it on road. Municipal staff takes lot of time to remove . more
There is no cause for finding a new location to generate electricity using the dry stuff of garbage. There is already a facility beyond Annanagar, which was functioning well a decade ago or so. People are lethargic to transport the garbage stuff that far and are trying to find new ways, though it is hazardous to the general public, who are mute spectators. The very purpose of placing collecting bins is thus defeated. The public should resort to effective protests to ensure timely clearance of garbage before it overflows and caused to spill by the rag pickers. Moreover, the rag pickers should be discouraged to avoid nuisance to the public, by effectively educating them and finding them alternative activity. more
