Good News - Medical Devices to be Regulated soon

As most of you know with your participation, LocalCircles has actively been working on the cause of more transparency with regards to medical devices and multiple submissions have been made to Government in this regards.

The first few wins we achieved was the Dept of Consumer Affairs coming out and making disclosure of MRP on the product a mandatory requirement via PCR 2017 amendment and the NPPA capping the prices of stents by 85%.

We are pleased to share with you that all implantable medical devices and high end medical equipment are being included under the purview of Drugs and Cosmetics act which means quality standards will now be set for all these devices including defibrillators, X ray machines, MRI equipment and a lot more.

As citizens, most of us are not technical enough to provide contribution on what should be the standards but we should certainly ensure that the standards setting process is fair and keeps the patients at the forefront as opposed to medical device manufacturers. If you have inputs on how this can be best achieved, please do share.

We look forward to your inputs! more

80-90 percent devices used in India are imported, whether they’re US/UK manufactured, or cheap Chinese alternatives more
Need medical device regulators. There’s still no specific medical device regulatory body and the industry is being monitored by drug regulators. more
A patient had an imported knee implant fitted, which started causing her pain and gave bruises over the next two years. Turned out, a metal pain from the implant became loose and started poking the inside of her skin. She went back for her revision surgery to the same doctor, who had done her first surgery at Medanta and was now at Fortis. And they were charged all over again for the entire procedure done in July 2018 as well as the new implant more
The network of dishonest is much stronger than the network of the honest. A large number of doctors take kickbacks on devices and drugs by manufacturers to use their products. If not direct monetary payment, then through trips abroad or financing their kids’ education etc. more
A group of qualified doctors of that speciality must be included in selecting the needed devices for quality and current preference internationally for use and prices can be worked out after that .We cannot have out dated medical devices at cheap prices in India .we are quite up to date in India as far as treatment is concerned.so choose the best and current in the market before deciding. more
