Sanitary napkins are a basic necessity of women all over the world. By laying a tax as high as 18% on it makes it quite un-affordable to many rural and low income class women and girls. It is not just for comfort but also hygienic. It concerns heath issues. If the government wants to put a stop on sanitary napkins due to their difficult degradable ability, there are many communities in India that are making low cost sanitary napkins with biodegradable and environment friendly materials. Promote that and remove the tax from such a basic necessity. If condoms don't have a tax then why do sanitary napkins have one? more
I endorse your view. This is basic and necessary amenity for every women.Government has no right to lay its hands on this .As you said the Government has to upgrade their degradable ability and promote the production of low cost making of Sanitary Napkins.this is concerned with the health of women in whole India. In fact Government should give subsidy for this to improve the health of India. This should come under SWATCH BHARATH. more
I can understand the concerns you have on the tax rate. However, the truth is that tax rate has been reduced under GST. If the GST rate is lowered as you ask, the price will go up since the manufacturers will have pay more of the raw materials. You must understand two things: how GST works and production cost of Sanitary napkins. Please read some of the articles http://www.deccanherald.com/content/622060/govt-defends-12-tax-sanitary.html http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/tax-incidence-on-sanitary-napkins-lowered-to-12-under-gst-2322551.html http://www.firstpost.com/business/gst-govt-says-tax-on-sanitary-napkins-lower-than-earlier-heres-the-full-text-of-the-statement-3799687.html The only solution that I can see is the all raw materials are made in India and with economies of scale to bring down the input costs. more
The problem, perhaps, could be that a blanket exemption to sanitary napkins could be misused as the biggest consumers are not women(estimated 12%), but others representing 88% who will be the major beneficiaries of the exemption. more
Unfortunately, people do not use their brains before protesting / writing. This issue has been specifically explained by the ministry and then, nobody protested. Kindly go through that before you decide to vote for anti-nationals !!!! more
