Impact of Chennai Emergency Circle

This morning, a request was raised in the LocalCircles Chennai Emergency Response circle to make phone calls and data services free for 48 hours in Chennai given the floods.

Attached highlights request and and response. We are pleased to share with you that Airtel, BSNL and Vodafone have already implemented this and others are considering it as well.

Also, the National Disaster Management Authority called upon us to share a special email address for citizens to reach rescue forces on the ground in Chennai as phone hotlines aren't working.

In these moments of crisis for Chennai, LocalCircles is pleased to see how its community members are helping each other there and coming together. It only strengthens our belief in what we have set out to do which is connect people for meaningful causes.

We will continue to work closely with the 25,000 connected citizens across 3 circles and others in Chennai through this crisis. If you have a family/friend who needs access to the circle, you can share the link below:

The citizens and the defence forces are doing an excellent job of the rescue and rehabilitation operations. Donations are pouring in and the PM has announced relief of 1000 crore and another 1000 cr. good. What would also be good if it is ensured that all this money does not go to into unwanted hands. Before any of this is spent, a budgeting, approval and audiing process needs to be put in place, instead of leaving it to the whims and fancies of the politicians to spend the amount. The World bank is willing to help in rebuilding the storm water drains, rain water harvesting etc. Help should be taken from them and other experts in our and other countries. Last but not the least, there are people in chennai who are trying to make a fast buck by selling vegetables, milk etc. at exhorbitant prices. Anyone trying this stunt should have their items confiscated and they should thrown into the flooded waters. The consicated items should be distributed free of cost to the needy. more
How do we help the reconstruction work that will be needed at an individual level- mainly repair of homes/employment. Can the banks and Govt provided hassle free low interest/no interest loans. Can we work in local circles to crowd fund some of these projects instead of waiting for the money granted by center and sate to trickle down to the common man. more
