India needs AI regulations earliest

Some of you may say why right away and here is my answer: to deal with deepfakes in India a legal and regulatory framework is urgent.

see attached this viral video of actress Rashmika Mandanna on Instagram. But this is a deepfaked video of Zara Patel who did the original one.

Now imagine when your or your family members face is mixed with a pornstar or criminal what would it become.

Imagine all that can be done with children. That is why google’s AI head left Google, because he felt AI will cause lot of damage. more

Regulations cannot do much. But citizens can do two things. First, reduce the use of social media including posting of sundry family photographs in FB and Insta. Second, do not believe everything you see on social media and stop forwarding messages originating from anonymous sources. On its part, the police and justice system should not accept blindly audios and videos as evidence since there is always a possibility of these having been tampered with. more
Technology and innovation will always precede enforcement. Its easier said than done. Technology has its positives. Abuse of technology should not be the only focus to curb technology as it will be to our detriment. The way to firmly deal with abuse is through strict enforcement. Bans, restrictions, new laws or regulations only give rise to clandestine abuse of technology or curbing technology. more
Such deepfake VDOs should be removed within minutes of reporting abuse. more
The loopholes must be closed more
Regulation is definitely needed. GOI is working on it. But it is a very difficult task to separate real and deep fakes. more
