Indian Railways and Government thinking...

Ever heard of a business, which is a monopoly, has a 100 crore customer base, sales only on advance payment, some times even 2 months advance, capacity utilization more then 100 %, but still makes a loss.....

It's Indian Railways.....Its never gona happen until and unless the administration and railway people improve themselves. more

Thanks Mr Chaturvedi for finding my post helpful more
anyhow raising the price wont solve the issue. let me know when the last time you heard the news and we are in profit and price has reduced by 10 % even... i never heard of it.... every1 is washing their hands in flowing ganga... who so ever come... dnt have that mind set to solve the issue.... even we can expect mr. narendra modi as well to think on each and every matter.... but in terms of utilizing the resource is responsibility of every manager... even the country managers... more
Bang on. There is one aspect however which is crucial to the whole change. That's us, people, our expectations are high but we are not clear on our fundamental requirements. Every time there is a rise and we make a hue and cry about it and settle in. The railways pacify's us starting few extra trains and we are happy about it. Our basic requirements are never addressed. Did any of the railway budget ever declare a fund or allocate resources for basic necessities? The benches in the stations are most of the time donated. I would like to only mention 2 crucial aspects. 1. SAFETY be it local or long distance. 2. HYGIENE whether its the station, platform or the train. SAFETY is as simple an assurance of having a uniformed soldier moving in the train and on the platform. It is also about installing CCTV cameras and making all aware that they are being watched. Simple preventive measures will itself make people conscious of safety aspects and make their travel safe. HYGIENE why do platforms and stations have to stink? If the metros can go closer to better hygiene surely railways can. Kolkata metro used to penalize people for spitting by making them clean it. Let the expectation from the traveler be known. the same traveler travelling overseas or for that matter at our airports will not dare to litter so why at the railways. There have been cleanliness drives but needs to be done consistently. It also becomes our responsibility to stop people from littering if we see anyone do so. Price rise is not done for the first time nor is it for the last time. We may choose to accept it or appeal, file an PIL etc, but lets understand what we are opposing to and what we want the railways to deliver. more
Well stated ,This 161 years old Indian railway employes about 12 lakhs people ,is one of the largest network of tracks ,having huge resources of man ,material, money and expert( Enginners, Traffic & admn) but one of the most inefficient ,inspite of 100 crore cutomer base with advance payment. It requires complete reengineering and drastic change in aptitude/ work culture and mindset of all the employee starting from lowest to highest. more
