India’s Healthcare Capacity and Coronavirus

Coronovirus statistics have a tipping point that media is missing.

What happens when the number of infected start overwhelming state capacity for healthcare? We need to have discussions in the circles and with Govt on what is being done to build healthcare capacity or handling system to handle Coronavirus or similar outbreaks

Eg., if you have 100 hospital beds available in a town and all get occupied, what will happen to the 101st patient?

All current data around loses significance at this point.

The marginal patient and the marginal fatality rate of the untreated patient is key.

China seems to have hit that tipping point, and we have ZERO information of what happens when patients can’t access hospitals.

That seems to be one of reasons for citywide lockdowns. There is no capacity available to handle the infected and hence rather than risk state-wide chaos, impose curfew.

Still to see a sensible analysis of the situation on the ground in China

India has very low healthcare capacity if it comes to hit us hard.

We need contingency planning and resources allocated.

Hope the warm weather protects us. more

I suggest that Diastar Management Setup is activated nationwide. Each unit is imparted adequate training how to combat the situation. Considering financial constraints, optimum number of centres should be prepared with necessary facilities, whereas each unit must have the ready action plan - with which unit contacts to be established in case of any incidence. India is capable of handling such situations - as displayed by actual actions in the case of several cyclones in the east coast in the past few years. more
I agree that Govt. must prepare for any eventuality. However, thorough screening of all passengers arriving from Corona Virus affected countries and their treatment must be strengthened to prevent its spreading in India. more
Has the circle member who has posted this ever been to any government hospital? Overflowing wards, staff always on the look out for bribes and dirty bathrooms are the most common images. Even under normal circumstances, there will be a few patients lying in the corridors. Don't compare India with China. Our country is run only for the benefit of bureaucrats and politicians. China is much more advanced, resourceful and is run by a strong government with a clear vision. Ours is a third world, fourth rate country. So if we ever do have a pandemic, we should hope for nothing better than a quiet death at home. more
Shikha stop this negative attitude and rather pray that the 101st case doesn't end up at your home. Government is aware and doing its bit, don't spread panic by negative thoughts. more
The solutions should be found within the existing infrastructure as far as possible as we know that the funds for the same are scarce and most of people don't like contributing even by paying regular taxes let alone coming together to meet such calamities. However the limitations of funds should not curtail the efforts required to meet the threat and effects of such calamities. more
