It is rather surprising that neither the Reserve Bank of India nor the Ministry of Finance are able to get implementation of RBI order dtd. 26th November 2013 w.r.t charging of SMS Alert Fee. It is estimated that Banks might be making unethical business revenue to the tune of Rs. 10,000 crores per year. One of the option seems to be deactivating SMS alert service from the accounts so that the banks are compelled to follow RBI order in its letter and spirit and put a stop on the unethical business revenue. What could be the issues that may arise subsequent to deactivating of SMS alert from your bank accounts. It is worth noting that the Banks themselves are responsible to frauds committed due to technology and therefore the consumers may not have any risk for the technology frauds due to non- linking of your bank accounts with SMS alerts. Harpal Sir Ji, Sorry for again interrupting. It is not difficult to monitor the SMSes. It is IT enabled service. The moment you draw the money or deposit the money, SMS gets shooted to the registered mobile of the consumer and the money for SMS gets debited. Its all automatic process and does not require any human intervention. UCO Bank is already doing. Nevertheless I am thank ful to your keen interest and the communication we had. more  
Mr. Virmani, the banks are out to make a profit. Why I prefer a fixed charge per month / quarter is because it eliminates the need to monitor the number of SMSs received. Even otherwise there are means available to inflate the in house expenses to make up to the desired figure of charges per SMS. As for the refund, it is not the money involved but a question of principal. It so happens that I have enough time to follow up such matters and easy means of communication are now available. I do it with the hope that it will affect their approach to a customer. Around 25 years back, I made Central Bank of India to pay me Rs.250.00 towards the cheque return and fine charges charged by Citibank as this happened due to the negligence of the bank The branch manager refused to admit that and asked me to do what ever I liked. It was a lesson well learnt by the branch and bank. Fight for your right is what is required. I feel, you should take up the wrong charges. It may, I repeat, it may help others. more  
Sir Harpal ji The last commwnts of mine is the ground reality. I am not worried about the refund and also I am reasonably aware of the procedure. I received the refund two years back. Refund was not at all an issue. The main question is that if the above incident has taken place with me then it would have happened to crores of consumers specially poor and under privileged community due to an automated and IT enabled services. This lead me to go in for RTI route and discovered unfair buainess practices. The basic question is it is in violation of the regulator advise and that stands proved. What is the objection of the bank not to follow RBI and Finance Ministry guidelines. Whether the charges come Re1/- per month or Rs. 50/- per month. Let it be charged on actual basis the basic RBI guideline. You would bw surprised tobknow even the poor customerd were getting debiting of Rs. 220/ per year for PMJSY without being aware or consent of the consumer. more  
Mr. Virmani, this is for your last message about the charges by SBI. The messages can be divided into 2 categories. One concerning your account transactions which you have subscribed. These attract a flat rate of Rs. 5 per month or Rs. 15 per quarter depending the way they charge. Any number of messages in a month /quarter are covered under this charge. The second category is the cautionary ones such as asking you not to tell your ATM PIN to anyone, the system being down due to maintenance and so on. These have no relation with your account and the banks are required to send these to all the customers irrespective of their subscription to SMS alerts or not. These have to be absolutely free. Only 2 messages telling you the account balance fall in the charged catagory and that also in the monthly / quarterly subscription. There is absolutely no reason why you should be charged Rs. 15 for each message. The thinking may be that if the you miss noticing the charge, there is no harm in getting some money for the bank. If it is noticed and a protest is received, say sorry and reverse it. Do take it up with SBI customer care to get it reversed. You should succeed in this. If not, write to the grievance redrressal officer and if required, to a higher level. You can find the email IDs of all at their website. Write an email and not through a hard copy or phone call. Email is an instant, free and sure shot way of writing with a proper record which is useful in future. No one can say that the email was not received. You will surely succeed. Best of luck for this.
