Leakage in Railway Ticketing - Key Issues

Dear Railways Circle Members:

The advance reservation window has been increased from 60 days to 120 days.

We understand that some of the members are of the opinion that the agents will now be able to block the tickets and resell later as many travellers may not be able to plan travel 4 months in advance.

To address this concern, we would rather focus on making changes to the system so leakage is eliminated and only genuine travellers are able to book tickets.

Kindly share your inputs on the various leakages you have observed. We will then look at the Root Causes and Solutions.

The objective is to clearly understand the problem at hand, its causes and then implement solutions that will fix this leakage.

We look forward to your inputs!

I also agree with you. jurney plan may be done 1 or 2 month before . So 120 may be reduced to 30 or 60 days. more
It is worth considering Samirji's points 3 &4 to improve customer service. more
hello, sir, more
Yes I agree on this advance booking time period as no one who is actual traveler plans his or her travel plan 120 days ahead of travelling. bringing it down to 30 days will give all travelers an ease to book tickets easily and there wont be unnecessary long wait list will happen. more
Suggest the following to improve reservation systems: While taking a wait list ticket, the passenger is not sure of its getting confirmed. He has to either wait anxiously till the chart is prepared or book a tatkal ticket 2 days before. Following suggestions will improve passenger service:. 1. Show Waiting list clearance position for each train/class for last 7 days. Western railways is doing it for some trains. url: http://www.wr.indianrailways.gov.in/view_section.jsp?lang=0&id=0,2,516 2. Show the breakup of various quotas reserved internally by railways ( eg VIP quota, military quota) for each train/class. Many times when these are not filled, passengers are reserved on these. The breakup should match the train capacity. 3. Normally extra coaches are planned during festival season. With advanced reservation period being 4 months, this can be announced early and waiting cleared much in advance. 4. Change of name should not be allowed on tickets. There may be a nexus between the reservation manager and touts to get the name changed and sell tickets in black. If allowed, a fees of say 30-50% of ticket value be charged. 5. On lines of tatkal quota, some quota should be released say 7-15 days before date journey. Cancellation charges may be kept very high here. This is to allow passengers to plan on short notice. more
