Lift safety issues persist

Yesterday in Noida a lift went through the tower roof because of maintenance negligence. See attached.

Why are state govts not payimh attention and bringing lifts act. If they are failing central govt should make mandatory lift maintenance standards issue. Poor maintenance can be fatal.
Whats so hard to understand ? more

Human life is very cheap in India. more
Every body wants short cuts and cheap rates. Some firms having AMCs do not even employ qualified people and don't do proper work. Unless standard procedures are strictly followed, such incidents will happen. more
AMC for lifts should not cross 12...at the most 15 k per year..In our apartment, we have one lift & paying 10 K as AMC..After 25 years we have replaced the doors, cables, made it auto stop after power goes off...All within the Karnataka government norms in Bangalore. You should question your society office bearers for such a high AMC cost... Please note in AMC, it is only normal inspection & parts if any are charged extra.. After 20 years, only those parts which are bound to have wear & tear needs replacement & verification from the government authorised contractor...Main part in the lift is Cables, the wheel shaft on which cable rotates and main circuit. more
It's a common complain nowadays. The society office bearers, who are designated for " Lift Maintenance" should abide without fail to undertake the yearly maintenance by the "Authorised AMC" contractors, in the presence of nominated office bearers with their photos, signatures and date for satisfactory completion of the job. It should be notified in the society group of each " Tower" as well. The people residing in the society should pay their dues timely, so that important maintenance jobs don't suffer. more
A lift is an electro-mechanical device that needs preventive maintenance at scheduled intervals. Certain parts like switches, pulleys, cables, and brakes need overhaul and replacement at scheduled intervals. Housing societies tend to cut corners and make compromises. A well-maintained lift will give better service, while a neglected lift will lead to serious issues. The cost of maintenance depends upon the type of lift and capacity. 12k that is mentioned by Mr Anil Joshi is on the lower side and is for an elementary model lift for a building up to 7-10 floors and that too for the initial 3 years. As the lift ages, the maintenance cost will keep rising with major overhauls at least once every 7 years or so. Another issue in public buildings is overloading the lift or compromising the counterweight that balances the lift with a lower weight. Many buildings disable the emergency brakes as it tends to slow down a lift. People have to be sensible but they think they can get away by cutting corners. Many a time they are lucky and then we have such ghastly incidents. Awareness and seriousness about this are needed. The government lift inspectors are so short-staffed that they don't even verify a lift in a decade. Many lifts are not even fit for running safely but are not replaced as some miserly landlord sees it as a way of 'saving' money. more
