Maternity Bill: Additional Citizen Inputs

LocalCircles had recently conducted polls in the Startup India circle on the impact of Maternity Bill. One of the key provisions in the bill is mandatory paid maternity leave of 6 months to women employees.

Based on the result (shared below) and extensively covered by national and international media, while the bill is a good move for women employees in large companies, startups and SMEs believe it will negatively impact women employment in their outfits. Schools, NGOs and many other micro entrepreneurs will also be impacted.

The ask presented to the Govt is to provide an exemption for any organization with less than 20 companies or annual revenues of INR 10 Crores.

We would like to invite your inputs on how a balance can be best achieved between providing maternity benefits without negatively impacting women employment.

I think, even the salary is paid for 6 months, it should be only basic, why burden the company. It is indeed a bad practice. I have worked in MNC certain black sheep take advantage of this system. They get into the job and after 1 year she would be found pregnant it's loss to the business. Post delivery it requires at least 1 year to child can to put in day care. more
Certainly not a good idea as the mother gets ready for normal life after about 4 weeks in normal course hence it is only political appeasing to get votes. Beyond this the employee's available leave should be permitted in cases where complications arise and ofcourse the expenses should be borne by the Government in all cases. more
It is over doing things. 3 weeks is quite adequate. RYK On Thu, 06 Apr 2017 10:02:03 +0530 "LocalCircles Manager" wrote > more
Good for employee, bad for business. more
Indian people have habit of taking opposite stand just for showing that they too have a opinion. This is very good provision to give 6 months leave for a mother to look after the new life she has brought in this world. Most of the developed countries have this provision. Of course there could be some provision where women could join say after 4 months are so and is paid f additional pay for those months like leave encashment rule. more
