Obscene Advertisements on TV during regular hours

A matter was recently raised in the LocalCircles Consumer Grievances circle regarding the obscene advertisements playing during IPL telecast between 4 pm and 11 pm. As a result below are the inputs from citizens on what should be done to address this matter. Kindly review and if you have any additional inputs, please share.

Obscene Advertisment on TV during Family Viewership Hours - Actions Needed

1. Ads with adult content should be screened through the regulatory authorities before they are aired
2. The regulatory authorities should define some rules for the display of these ads on TV channels
3. These ads should not be allowed to be aired during mass viewer items like cricket matches, movies etc.
4. The channel should also be made responsible to check the content of the ads before they are displayed
5. In case rules are not followed, both the advertiser and the channel should be fined
6. Channels should try to maintain our cultural perspective and not go after only profits
7. Channels should also be to open telephone lines so that viewers could complaint about the contents of any advertisement
8. Every ad could display “audience age/discretion” on the top as soon as it starts or 2 seconds before it starts
9. The content of the news & ads featured in TV Channels have to comply with the norms framed by the Broadcasting Editors Association of India & the Advertisers Standards Board of India
10. Also if viewers find an ad offensive or obscene, their should be a provision to make an online complain to Advertising Standards Council of India and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. more

Yes, it is very much needed to be strictly regulated. In fact, each and every ad irrespective of the content is always linked to some sexual act. Sometimes it's totally irrelevant. Before airing the same it must be reviewed by the regulatory body instead of leaving it to the viewers to complain directly to the advertising council. Most of the people either don't know the procedure or don't have the means to reach the council. Very recently, I wrote to the council for an underwear ad to which they took action but not to the extent it should have been done. It is really embarrassing with the family. more
The Codes and Regulations separately for Journalist Media Houses and ; the Entertainment T. V. Channel Houses as well as the same and specific in the Advertisement Councils is a must with sharing of Retired Judges in the Bodies . more
This must be pursued more
There should be a TV users' association to monitor and advise TV advertisers. There are many advertisements which are in not appropriate for family viewing. more
why only 4 pm to 11 pm. all obscene advts without any message (useful) should be not be encouraged. for example : how does using a Deo will get girls all over you ? This is plain rubbish. encouraging use of condoms is good, but sunny leone selling chocolate/strawberry flavored condoms ? I & B Should take responsibility to screen all such advts. more
