Population census

Data is crucial for democracy. Decadal census carried out in India since the year 1881, was for the first time, due in 2021, has been delayed! Data gives an objective idea of where we stand vis-a-vis claims, insofar as data:
1.Directs our attention towards parameters requiring action, for example, how many of our population has still survived past the pandemic, and;
2. Score keeping, that India did remarkably well given our population, such as India's per capita income. The denominator here being population.
Our ministers while giving speeches say we are 130 crores strong, although that number was surpassed 11 years back, at 139 crores!
As the note mentions, given India's statistical prowess, we require a headcount to objectively ascertain our progress. more

India's total fertility rate is high also, above replacement levels, making population a cause for concern. more

It is a fundamental right,” the former Congress chief asserted. more
Posted above a last year. The delay in conducting the census has raised concerns about the accuracy of population estimates and rescource allocation for government schemes, consequently. Welfare schemes like the targeted public distribution system under the national food security act depend on accurate headcounts and relying on outdated data may result in some deserving beneficiaries being deprived of benefits. more
Not saying Modi's administration has been found wanting. But when he has so many firsts to his credit such as giving all an identity like Aadhaar number, and linking each one's unique identity with various deliverables, then census too should have been done, after all resources must be allocated and are limited. Unlimited resource, such as solar energy, that for practical purposes being so, being abandant lasting million years, even if entire planet gets powered by the sun's rays, at current consumption levels, may be left unaccounted. more
