Potable Water to households

Everyone must look at the attached chart on how this Government has made progress on piped water connections to households. Its praiseworthy.

The next challenge we must discuss is how to ensure people get clean drinking water in these pipes.

Municipalities and Jal Boards have such poor accountability. We need BIS and other bodies to have a standard for piped water and then every municipality must mandatorily adhere to it within 6 months with all checks and balances and fines to be paid to residents if the water is found to be contaminated.

When humans value man made objects more than water, nature's resource, and in rich, tony colonies, for example, wealthy car owners have been seen washing cars, when cars can be dusted and cleaning cars with a damp cloth equally effectively. Will they irrigate the trees that provide shade, or does that also depend only on the rains! Water availability is the barometer of how well conserved our environment is. more
Project Jal Jeevan Mission is commendable. Only the people involved in implementing the project must be sincere and honest so that people get hygienic water. Also, they must adhere to project time frame. As many proposals/projects announced in various budgets have not been initiated at all. For example, long way to go in bank mergers and privatisation of 2 banks. Impetus must be given without any further delay. more
Mr Ramchandran Nair is absolutely right in pointing out the drawbacks of piped water supply. Despite those set back, bringing water to all households in villages where source of water is miles away, is a herculean task. Something is better than nothing. Quality of such water could be improved to some extent at users end. more
Leave alone clean water, the Phd sometimes stops its supply without any notice. Moreover any alterations or improvements are outsourced to contractors who are cheating the public and making money. more
"Clean potable drinking water coming to your home through pipes"? Imagine the Government/Municipality/Jal Board spend crores of rupees to treat water to make it potable for the consumer. In most of the cities and towns pipes laid by the British still exists and this clean water comes through these 100+years old pipes. Then it comes to your underground tank ( as one need to collect water when ever they decide to supply)and pump up to the overhead tank and bring it down through pipes and valves. 1.Do they flush the pipe line? If so what is the frequency? 2.Have they used GI pipes and if so what class of pipe? 3.What is the frequency of cleaning the under ground and over head tank? (1,3,6,12,months or never?) 4.How many consumers get the water tested for its purity and at what frequency? 5.How do they construct U.G. and O.H tanks and what type of material they use to plaster the inside of these tanks? Cement, ceramic tiles, epoxy paint? or terra cotta tiles? The business of water purifiers, and bottled water, "so called Mineral Water", and 20 lit water can filled with dirty water in a unhygienic way will thrive in India. I grew up in a village and the wells are cleaned just before the monsoon so that what ever sludge settled are cleared. We never had Water Purifiers or filters and drank water from the well. While storing in mud pots, we used certain roots to purify the water. Don't dare blame the government or Jal Nigams. It is the citizens who make the water unhygienic by not adhering to standard practices and come here and blame the government. more
