Public Safety - Inputs on Issues

With this post we would like to seek your inputs on key Public Safety issues in India that you have observed/experienced.

Lack of Public Safety is common in India and frequently results in deaths and injuries. Recent examples include:
1) Death of over 100, injuries to over 150 from mining explosives stored in a building in MP
2) Train accidents in Shimla, near Karnataka and Harda
3) Stampede in AP during holy dip
4) Deaths from bootleg and adulterated liquor in Maharashtra
5) High tension wire falling on a bus in Rajasthan

Thousands of such episodes occur every year in the country.

Please share your inputs on all possible issues of public safety and then let us put together a whitepaper and make this a national cause "Surkashit Bharat or Safe India"

We look forward to your participation! more

I am really surprised to find that none of the contributors point out one sure and certain type of death: Road Accidents. Road accidents take place in India as a routine affair. These are the types of road accidents take place in India: - Pedestrians are crushed to death by moving vehicle. One vehicle tries to overtake another and brushes the edge causing sometimes death. One vehicle collides at the rear of another vehicle. Finally, one vehicle collides head on with another vehicle. Causes of first type, i.e., Pedestrians are crushed to death by moving vehicle: - All roads do not have footpaths. All crossings do not have color light signalling arrangement. A kind of convention exists in Indians' mindset to give more importance to vehicles than human lives. How to prevent accidents of first type, i.e., Pedestrians are crushed to death by moving vehicle: - All roads will have to have footpaths. Height of footpaths have to be lowered to road level with smooth finishing to accommodate easy movement or perambulator and such kind of stuff from road to footpath and vice versa. All roads have to be provided with color light signals at crossings. Rules of crossing road to change footpath is to be modified vis a vis color light signalling - If a pedestrian sets foot on road while signal for pedestrian has just changed from red to yellow or even when color meant for pedestrian just changed from yellow to red, no vehicle on cross road will move an inch. They will remain absolutely stationary, preferably engines shut and without honking. They will remain so at a distance of at least 5' away from the end of zebra crossing mark and will remain so till last pedestrian hans not climbed the opposite footpath. If any vehicle breaks any kind of rule, it should be punished severely, whereas breaking of a serious rule by a pedestrian should be dealt with most leniently. Causes of second type, i.e., One vehicle tries to overtake another and brushes the edge causing sometimes death: - Roads are not one-way. Roads do not have lane marking according to speed range. How to prevent accidents of second type, i.e., One vehicle tries to overtake another and brushes the edge causing sometimes death: - All roads have to be made either one-way and each such way will be marked with lanes according to speed range. If however, absence of parallel road prevents to make two-way, the lone road has to be modified by putting a divider along the center of the road. If this reduces width of each side to such a n extent that no further lane can be marked, so be it, so let there be no provision of overtaking, so let there be reduction of speed. All these "so let there be's" are in exchange of reduction of human deaths. Causes of third type, i.e., One vehicle collides at the rear of another vehicle. The vehicle which is ahead has to apply brake to prevent crushing of pedestrian. But measures are already taken of pedestrian crossing roads by introducing infrastructures and new rules already stated. The vehicle which is ahead has no rear-end signals or poorly has visible rear-end signals. How to prevent accidents of third type, i.e., One vehicle collides at the rear of another vehicle: - All vehicles will have to have prominent and distinct color light signals. Causes of fourth type, i.e., One vehicle collides head on with another vehicle: - Absence of either one-way roads or double-way roads by putting divider through the center of the road. How to prevent accidents of fourth type, i.e., One vehicle collides head on with another vehicle: - The preventive measures of earlier types do take care of this prevention too. more

Accidents take place in all parts of the world, including developed nations. However, corruption resuling in low quality, poor law & order etc. is the root cause of most of the accidents in India. Policemen & other sections of bureacrats work at the dictates of/connivance with their political masters. more
And one more thing. Appointment to the IAS MUST be on merit, not caste, jaat, or any other reason. Our country cannot be run by people who are not the best of the best. more
