R A C is it a boom or bane?

Many times it has been observed that passengers are charged for full for RAC ticket but they have to share the birth with other passenger if no berth is available. Most of the RAC bookings alloted for side berths. I had a bad experience on 26.03.2018 while coming from Delhi. Train No. 12908 Maharashtra Sampark Express. I had confirmed ticket of 3AC. Coach B3 seat 64. Side berth. 2 passengers were allotted seat No.63. The journey is of more than 17 hrs. The train departed at 21.35 from H. Nizamuddin station. But I have to share my seat with the 3rd extra passenger till 11.30. I was not able to take my dinner comfortably or sit comfortably. I went to sleep on upper berth, I occupied my berth till morning then on humanitarian grounds I gave it to my co-passenger so that he can take sleep. Whole night two passengers shared berth No.63 and unfortunately one of two was disabled.
What is the logic behind RAC. When wait listing system is already in existence. Charging full fare and not allotting berth, taking undue advantage of passengers. Passenger is totally dependant on TTE for allotment of berth. TTE may give available berth to some other passenger on a premium.
In my opinion RAC system should be abolished right now and only waitlisted passenger should be given available berths and seats. more

How do you share a 'birth:? more
Going through the above comments one can definitely find an attitude of being grateful for tender mercies doled to us by the Railways. As consumers, we have a long way to go before demanding quality services for our money and no wonder then that even private companies take us for granted even after paying top dollar for goods and services. Nobody cares. more
Abolishing RAC is not the solution.Seeing the wait listed nos of passenger accordingly adding one or two bogie that nos may be adjusted . and in the case of less no the seat may be shared but the price should be halved and the balance money should be refunded. It is a boon for those who wants to go anyhow and going can not be avoided & for those who has to suffer because of sharing is a bane. more
RAC is really a boon and a bane. Once when I travelled by BBVT to tatanagar by howrah mail in sleeper the first RAC was cleared at gonda i.e after 17 hrs of journey. Just imagine the fate of 3persons sharing a side berth with no back support for 7-8 hours. Why not convert 4 (2LB+2MB) into 6 RAC so that night journey doesn't become a torture more

RAC SHOULD BE ABOLISHED more
RAC should be abolished. Because of our fellow citizens, this RAC is not getting strong opposition. When SMBs came, opposition was there, but when RAC , people say its good. Strange psychology. For railways, the point is making more money hiding the fact among most people stating RAC is good. I feel, let railways segregate trains having RAC and no RAC, then effective people mentality can be seen. For example, in CSMT-SBC route, say 11301/2 has RAC and 11014/3 does not. Railways have included another rule silently which is illegal. In recent journeys I saw people coming in with general ticket and paying TTE fine + excess fare difference and boarding SL coaches, even though they were full. I asked TTEs in ECoR, SER, CR, SCR and all pointed out the new rule in railways. So even if coach has 72+8=80 passengers and also around 15 WL, another 10 are getting added. So now onwards, people book just one ticket for a group of 4/5 people while booking at end moment, and if it gets confirmed, the remaining come with general tickets and travel in the same coach crowding the same. This also helps saving on cancellation charges, once the ticket is not confirmed or plan changed. In such cases, we also demanded, fare for travelling by sitting in our bay from some cases, but then we had heated argument after which they left. The argument by those people were that they will pay TTE and its none of our business. Our argument was, its our berth, we paid and if you wish to travel here, you need to pay us. All this even when GS coaches were quite empty. So all this being done by railways for getting more revenue. Unless we retort against such moves strongly, the RAC problem also cant be solved. more
