RAILS IN TOILETS FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED :

Demand / Request for separate toilets for different genders
You would have noticed that while booking tickets we are to select the Gender . Now a days we have 3 choices against the previous 2. If there is reservation for one GENDER there not be a demand for the third also. We have to think about it in the light of the availability of scarce toilets in the compartments. Airplanes one pays exorbitant fare , but they don’t offer separate ones .
Is this demand justifiable where there is severe constraint for space ? I would rather Demand Toilet for the physically challenged * and the elderly* rather than on the basis of sexism and discriminate one from the other . We Indians are generally tolerant and understanding.
Instead I would welcome demand for :
* CLEAN & STINK FREE TOILETS , FIX EXHAUST FANS IN ALL TOILETS [SOME HAVE BEEN INSTAALLED NOW ],
* LITTLE MORE SPACIOUS TOILETS THAN THE PRESENT CRAMPED 3 ½ FEET X 4 FEET ONES ,
* HAND RAILS FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED AND THE ELDERLY IN ONE OF TOILETS , WHICH SHOULD HAVE PRIORITY FOR THEM BUT ALSO USED BY OTHERS WHEN NOT IN USE.
* CHANGE THE RATIO OF WESTERN AND INDIAN TOILETS FROM 1: 3 TO 2:2 . THERE SHOULD BE 2 WESTERN TOILETS AND 2 INDIAN TOILETS IN EACH COMPARTMENT.
* IF POSSIBLE HAVE AN EXCLUSIVE URINAL FOR MEN ALONE OR THOSE WHO CAN USE STANDING. THAT WILL TAKE ONE PARTICULAR STINK AWAY . more

I hope members of this Circle would agree upon a well-deserved vote of appreciation for Mr Daniel, who is putting in tremendous effort and energy into making travelling in trains easier and more comfortable, especially for ladies and for the "challenged" than now. Kudos also for the Railway Ministry that they "listen" to the people's voice and react with a friendly and forthcoming response ! more
After certain accidents some people are condemned to using Western toilet due to inability to bend the knee for squat position, as also due to arthritis. Uncaring males spatter urine all over the seat since they cannot bother to lift it up. Once in a Train Western toilet there was no outlet and water from the tap was collecting on the floor like a tank. Surely the manufacturers should ensure that separate outlets are available in Western Toilets, since it is only in the Indian toilet that everything flushes out through the basin! L.Kalavathi Retd. This is almost a similar sort of situation, I did mention when there was a question of separate Toilet for ladies. I had not advocated for separate Toilets. I had emphasized to look into the problems faced and then make suggestions for those rather than asking for separate Toilets. It is very true that physically challenged persons my face some difficulties while using Toilets. It is also good that people think about their comforts. We must think to provide those. Some of the suggestions made by Gopabandhu are workable and are good, we should think on those for implementations rather than providing separate Toilets. Thanks more

It dont think there is going to be an end to such demands. Are there any specially designed toilets for handicapped persons at public places like, hotels, cinema halls, community centers etc. The western style toilet is best for physical handicapped persons. The major problem with these in trains is lack of sense of responsibility for their use. No one bothers to lift the seat cover while passing urine (by males), and after use in general. None cares for flushing. We Indians have our mindset like this. Because this is not installed in our house and its stink is not reaching our house we hardly care. There can be some preventive actions through design modifications like; Spring actioned seat covers which are lifted automatically after use. Automatic flushing when toilet door is opened or when seat cover is lifted. Regarding safety and ease for handicapped persons, handles are provided in toilets. More attachments can be provided after doing thorough need assessment. Railways provides the facilities but how to ensure that these are not stolen. more
